DENVER (AP) — Colorado authorities tried to assure motorists that there is plenty of fuel Wednesday amid scuffles among people at pumps that occurred after the East Coast terrorist attacks.

Andrew Hudson, spokesman for Mayor Wellington Webb, said city officials received reports of service stations charging exorbitant prices. He said that information would be turned over to the attorney general.

"At this point, everyone should be outraged at people trying to take advantage of this situation," Hudson said.

By Wednesday, most prices had returned to normal and there were no major lines at pumps in the metro area.

Mary Greer, spokeswoman for AAA Colorado, said prices were normal at 25 gas stations she checked in the south-Denver area. "Most prices are unchanged from yesterday, ranging from $1.53 to $1.69 for regular self-serve unleaded," she said.

Local industry officials said gas supplies are good and distribution lines are normal, so there’s no reason to panic, Greer said.

Attorney General Ken Salazar said any business making false representations about gasoline supplies could face prosecution. "There does not appear to be any gasoline shortage at the present time anywhere in the country, according to the American Petroleum Institute, and certainly none has developed between Sept. 10 and today that could justify or support a sharp increase in retail prices at this time."

In Cortez, prices had stayed largely the same as of Wednesday afternoon, although long lines were seen at fuel stations the night before.

In Grand Junction, police had reports of long lines for gas causing traffic jams, but no reports of price-gouging or scuffles.

Mesa County also issued a news release saying fuel supplies are adequate and prices are expected to remain stable.
