SMASHED HONEYBEE
hives litter the ground at the apiary of Lynn Ellis last week. A
late-night honey feast by a black-bear sow and cub left them
sated, but destroyed 10 hives, with a total estimated value of
$2,000. Ellis said he believes the honey raids have been going on
since mid-July on County Road 29, but he wasn’t sure until a
neighbor called him to report seeing the bears last Wednesday.
Ellis, who has had an apiary there for nearly 15 years, plans to
put up an electric fence now, and will apply for reimbursment from
the Colorado Division of Wildlife. "It kind of hurts,"
said Ellis. "That’s a lot of honey going down the
drain." |
