Numbers lower at 2001 rally

September 6, 2001

The 2001 Four Corners Iron Horse Motorcycle Rally saw fewer participants and fewer glitches than last year, according to law-enforcement officials and rally organizers.

  • A total of 25,386 rally admission armbands was sold for the four-day event, compared to last year’s approximately 30,000 participants, according to rally-board president Warren Bernard.

  • The Cortez Police Department responded to one motorcycle crash with minor injuries and assisted the Colorado State Patrol with a minor disturbance related to a traffic stop in the Golden Corral parking lot, according to CPD Chief Roy Lane.

  • The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to no rally-related incidents over the holiday and made no DUI arrests, according to Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Kalvin Boggs.

  • The Colorado State Patrol reported three fatality motorcycle wrecks, and several area motor-vehicle accidents in addition to numerous traffic stops, according to CSP Capt. Allen TeBrink.

  • The Cortez office of the CSP responded to two motorcycle-related crashes on Sunday, according to CSP Trooper Steve Keller.

  • The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office responded to 421 incidents on Saturday and 298 Sunday, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Bender. None of the incidents was described as serious. Forty-six DUI arrests were made in La Plata County over the holiday.

  • No motorcycles were reported stolen — a first for the rally’s nine-year run.

Despite the lower attendance, area businesses reported full hotels and busy restaurants with overflowing parking lots and campgrounds.
