County lifts fire ban

Aug. 21, 2001

The fire ban is off — until the next dry spell.

Montezuma County Sheriff Joey Chavez asked the county commissioners to consider lifting the ban because of recent moisture and requests from the agricultural community. The fire ban is a permanent fixture; however, it can be suspended during times when the fire danger is low.

However, county residents who are planning a controlled burn are reminded to notify the sheriff’s office by calling 565-8441 so that deputies don’t waste time chasing smoke. Burns within the Cortez city limits require a permit from the fire department.
