Durango Herald runs series on immigration from Mexico

Aug. 21, 2001

Old tires substitute for a walkway in front of Maria Corrales' corrugated tin-and-plywood home in Nogales, Mexico, in mid-June. Corrales wants to build a better house someday, but her husband would have to work in the United States to afford it, she said.

The Cortez Journal’s sister newspaper, the Durango Herald, is publishing an eight-day series on immigration entitled "Crossing Over/Cruzando Fronteras."

The comprehensive series, which includes stories in both English and Spanish, looks at the hopes and frustrations of Mexican immigrants, and the growing impact of immigration on the Four Corners economy. Also included are photos, maps and other graphics, as well as opinion pieces written by people who hold a variety of views on the subject.

Coverage in the Sunday, Aug. 19, edition, focused on the perilous journey to new opportunity, followed on Monday by a discussion of how immigrants answer Durango’s labor needs. The rest of the schedule is as follows:

• Tuesday: "Mary Kinney and a mission in Nogales"

• Wednesday: "Negotiating the maze to legality"

• Thursday: "Ethnicity and culture both unite and divide"

• Friday: "Cops and agencies present immigrants a mixed bag"

• Saturday: "Church offers immigrants community"

• Sunday: "On the border: Where policy gets personal"

Copies of the Durango Herald are available at the Cortez Journal office, 37 E. Main in Cortez, or by calling the Herald at 247-3504. It can be viewed Online at http://www.durangoherald.com
