Aug. 14, 2001 Two Towaoc women lost their lives Sunday morning when their car spun out of control and careened into an oncoming vehicle in Bayfield. The driver, 43-year-old Delilah Singh, and passenger Colette Hamlin, 30, died instantly, according to a report from the Colorado State Patrol. The sole occupant of the other vehicle, John Tucker, 41, of Flora Vista, suffered minor injuries in the crash but was not taken to the hospital for medical attention. According to the report, Singh and Hamlin were westbound on U.S. Highway 160 just before 8 a.m. and rounding a curve near the 160 Bayfield business bypass when Singh lost control of her vehicle. The car, estimated to be traveling at approximately 99 mph, spun into the eastbound traffic for more than 200 feet and then back into the westbound lane, where it collided with Tucker’s jeep. Tucker reportedly attempted to avoid the collision by swerving into the westbound lane, but to no avail. Neither Singh nor Hamlin was wearing a seat belt and Hamlin was partially ejected from the car. Both women were suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, according to the report, but toxicology results are still pending, said CSP Capt. Allen TeBrink. In a separate accident Friday, a 13-year-old girl from Montezuma Creek, was fatally wounded. Shauntel Little was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital where she died from injuries sustained in a crash in rural San Juan County, Utah. |
