Growth-management grant application announced

The Colorado Heritage Planning Grants program provides grants to assist local governments in anticipating and responsibly addressing the unique public impacts caused by growth. The CHPG is part of Gov. Bill Owens’ "Smart Growth: Colorado’s Future."

The program was created through HB 1427, during the 2000 legislative session, Administered through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), it is designed to target important issues such as the environment, development patterns, transportation needs and land and energy use.

Information about the CHPG program is now available through the DOLA, Office of Smart Growth. In the first funding cycle, 17 projects were funded in 45 communities. These projects ranged from efforts to preserve open spaces and ranches, to exploring local government revenue sharing methods, to the creation of regional growth-management plans.

Applications for the grants are now available for the 2001-02 funding cycle, which has $770,485 available. Applications are due Sept. 20, with awards to be made in November.
