FLAMES LICK along the ground in an
aspen stand in the Plateau Creek area north of Dolores Tuesday.
The slow-moving burn was ignited by lightning July 9 and has
spread to about 500 acres, all on remote public lands. It is
being monitored by fire officials but allowed to continue
burning in order to clear out dead brush and enhance the area.
On Wednesday, San Juan National Forest spokesperson Ann Bond
said recent rains had made the roads into the area too muddy to
traverse, so the blaze is being monitored from the air. National
and regional forest supervisors toured the resource-benefit burn
on Tuesday. |
