Four council seats open in Ute election

July 31, 2001

The application deadline for candidates interested in running for four open seats on the Ute Mountain Ute tribal council is Aug. 28.

Ute voters will go to the polls Oct 12. Three council seats belonging to Selwyn Whiteskunk, Carl Knight, and Eddie Dutchie Jr., representing the White Mesa community, are up for election. A tribal chairman will also be chosen.

Ernest House will have completed a two-year term as Ute Mountain chief, but it is not known if he will run again or if his predecessor, Judy Knight-Frank, might.

Some issues facing the Ute Mountain Tribe include construction of the Animas-La Plata reservoir project, economic development, education, and preserving cultural tradition and language.
