Crow Canyon offers Monument Valley Trip

July 26, 2001

The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center presents "Monument Valley on Horseback," an extended field trip for adults. The program will explore Navajo Culture and the geology and archaeology of one of the most photographed regions of the American Southwest.

Led by Harry Walters and Bill Lipe, PhD., this program will take place between Oct. 4 and 9, and begins and ends in Cortez. The $1,645 tuition includes most meals, comfortable shared accommodations, horses, and camping gear for two nights under the stars.

Walters, a Navajo tribal member and director of the Center for Diné Studies at Tsaile, Ariz., describes Navajo traditional and ceremonial life, and the intimate relationship the Navajo people have with this spectacular valley.

Lipe, veteran archaeologist and professor at Washington State University, explains the powerful geological forces that created this desert landscape, and also discusses the rock art and architecture left behind by ancient people.

A luxury camp awaits riders at the end of the day, with stand-up tents with cots, commodes, hot showers and delicious meals. Singing, storytelling and stargazing around the campfire are the evening’s entertainment.

Participants need to be experience riders, however, novice riders are encouraged to ride at home before the trip to become comfortable with the basics of horsemanship.
