Seniors needed to promote health

July 26, 2001

Are you 50 or older, active and seeking adventure? How about sharing that experience with youths aged 8-18 through the "Partnering for Healthy Habits"?

Sponsored by the Montezuma County Health Department, the program promotes exercise and good nutrition while fostering understanding between generations. More volunteers are being sought to participate in the senior-junior partnership, made possible through a grant from Colorado for Healthy People.

This summer, participants rafted the Animas and Colorado rivers; bicycled the Dolores River Canyon; hiked the trail to Hope Lake; and toured Stone Free Farms where fresh vegetables were picked and prepared for lunch.

Partnering for Healthy Habits has also sponsored a weekly Tai Chi class at the Cortez Senior Center, still going strong after eight months. Upcoming activities include swimming, horseback riding, touring the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park, nutrition advice, hiking the high country and a tour of the farmers’ market.

Pick your favorite activity or do them all. Seniors are needed because they can make a difference in a young person’s life. All activities are free and transportation is provided. Most activities take place on Wednesdays throughout the summer.

For more information, call John Godby at 565-3056 ext. 233, or visit the health department, 106 W. North St., Cortez.
