July 26, 2001 By Aspen C. Emmett The search for a suspect in an armed robbery ended Tuesday afternoon, less than 48 hours following the alleged hold-up at the Mesa Verde Motel in Mancos. According to Mancos Marshal David Palacios, a 14-year-old Hispanic male from Mancos was arrested in connection with the robbery, which occurred late Sunday evening. The name of the suspect could not be released because he is a juvenile. Armed with a revolver, the youth allegedly rang the doorbell at the motel office and was allowed in by motel manager Robin Schmittel. The boy reportedly pointed the gun at Schmittel and his wife and demanded all the money in the cash register. The couple complied and the suspect fled the motel on foot with approximately $365, Palacios said. No one was injured in the incident. "We worked this (investigation) pretty solid since the day it happened," Palacios said. "We conducted some interviews and, based on our interviews, we were able to write a warrant." At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday the boy was arrested without incident. "We took the juvenile into custody and brought him to the station ,where we interviewed him. We were able through that interview to gather some critical evidence, which is now booked into our custody." Palacios would not say whether the juvenile confessed to the crime. "He made a statement but we’re going to hold on to the details of that statement for right now." The marshal’s office is still investigating where the boy obtained the gun and whether he acted alone in the robbery. "The investigation is still ongoing," Palacios said. "We could get some more arrests out of this but we’re not sure." Palacios credited the Schmittels for handling the situation calmly and giving a good description of the suspect. " The description we were given matched him to a T." The boy is being held at the juvenile-detention center in Durango on suspicion of aggravated robbery, felony menacing, theft and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. |
