July 14, 2001 Cortez Journal Staff Writer Over the past two weeks, fire crews have put out six wildfires ignited by lightning on Forest Service and BLM lands managed by the Dolores Public Lands Office. However, an additional four fires have been monitored, instead of immediately put out, so they can be used to benefit natural resources and lower future fire danger. Two fires continue to smolder at about a quarter-acre in size in remote stands of ponderosa pine and oak. Both lightning strikes were reported July 9. The North Glade Fire is in the northwest corner of the Glade. The North Plateau Fire is in a remote side drainage of upper Plateau Creek. |
