July 14, 2001 By Kevin Denkte A local man was injured late Thursday afternoon when his tractor-trailer careened out of control on Highway 145 between Stoner and Rico, pinning him inside the truck cab. Forty-one-year-old Nielson’s employee Alvin Cayatineto of Cortez was trapped inside the vehicle for over an hour and a half as emergency crews worked to free him from the vehicle, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Steve Keller. Cayatineto was driving south on 145 when he rounded a curve near Mile Marker 37 and lost control of the vehicle. It began to veer off the right side of the road, Keller said. He over-corrected, causing the truck to veer left and the empty trailer to slide. The fifth wheel was ripped from the vehicle and the trailer rolled on its right side. The truck itself continued on for another 50-70 feet, according to Keller, before finally coming to a rest on its side near a Forest Service access road. When Cayatineto was finally freed from the vehicle, he was flown by Air Care to Mercy Medical Center in Durango. Keller said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor in the crash. He said charges are pending. Word was not available as of press time on Cayatineto’s condition. |
