July 10, 2001 Durango Herald Staff Report A fire five miles southeast of Mancos began shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. The fire was burning mostly piñon and juniper trees off County Road 113, a Durango Interagency Fire dispatcher said. Russell Amidon, who lives about five miles from where the fire burned, said "it exploded." "It went from a small fire to 20 acres in a matter of about 20 minutes," he said. Two fire engines from Dolores responded, as well as many local fire engines. One helicopter, three air tankers and a plane responded as well. The aircraft were released by 8:30 p.m. The dispatcher said she knew of no structures damaged. Amidon said the tankers were on the scene very quickly, and crews put fire retardant lines around the fire. "If the boys wouldn’t have gotten a handle on it, it would have gotten out of control," Amidon said. |
