An evening at McPhee Reservoir turned bloody for a Dolores man who was unexpectedly attacked by a stranger with an ax at approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday.

According to Montezuma County Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Kalvin Boggs, 20-year-old Jason Rose said he was in the House Creek area when an unidentified person came after him with an ax, striking him three times in the back and once in the neck.

Details of the incident are still unclear, Boggs said, and there have been no arrests or suspects named.

Rose was taken to a relative’s home and then transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

"He came in with multiple lacerations, he had sutures and was discharged," said Jenis Tucker, executive secretary of administration for Southwest.

Boggs said the case is still under investigation and it is possible there were witnesses to the incident but none have come forward or been named by the victim.

It is unclear why Rose was at the lake and alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, Boggs said.

"We’re still looking into that," he said.

"When it was reported, he (Rose) was already at the hospital. . . when we went up there, nobody was around. Whatever it was broke up before we got up there."

If and when the perpetrator is caught, Boggs said, he or she will likely face charges of felony first-degree assault or even something more serious because of the weapon used to inflict the injuries.

"It could possibly be attempted murder — you go after somebody with an ax, it could kill them," he said.

Although no one has been apprehended, residents and visitors to the area should not be concerned, Boggs said.

"We believe it was just an isolated incident."
