May 29, 2001 By Aspen C. Emmett A Cortez man remained unconscious and in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction Monday following a four-wheeler accident on Granath Mesa 13 miles north of Dolores. Robert Johnson, 31, wrecked his four-wheeler Saturday evening but wasn’t discovered until Sunday morning, when a motorist drove by the scene at 6 a.m., said Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Don Cline. Johnson was reportedly eastbound on Forest Service Road 529 when he went off the roadway, striking some oak brush and rolling the four-wheeler. Cline estimated his speed at 50 mph — a very high speed for a four-wheeler. "That’s probably the reason that he lost control," Cline said. Johnson suffered massive head trauma and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Sunday morning. Drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the accident. Road 529 is a one-lane gravel road in a very secluded area and Johnson was lucky the motorist had happened upon him, Cline said. "He’d probably still be lying there," he said. |
