May 26, 2001 Just as high school graduation is an annual event, so seems to be tire-slashing during the graduation ceremonies. Last year two teenagers were arrested for slashing 15 tires on 10 vehicles while graduates were crossing the stage. This year it was one teenager apprehended for slashing seven tires on seven vehicles. According to Cortez Police Chief Roy Lane, all seven vehicles that were slashed Thursday were parked in the Notah Dineh Trading Company parking lot on Main Street. Nineteen-year-old Marvin Skeet of Eagar, Ariz., was arrested at the scene. "They caught him in the parking lot and after talking to him, he admitted to doing it but he didn’t say why," Lane said. It is unknown why Skeet is in Cortez. Alcohol consumption was believed to be a factor in his behavior. Damages are estimated at $600. Skeet is currently in the Montezuma County jail on a felony hold awaiting a bond advisement, according to County Court Clerk Donna Sullivan. Formal charges will be filed Tuesday. |
