Boy shot in hunting accident

May 22, 2001

A 15-year-old boy was injured on Friday night while he and another juvenile, also 15, hunted prairie dogs on private property in Dove Creek.

The accident occurred when one of the boys’ guns went off, sending a bullet through the teenager’s thigh. The bullet "went through and through and didn’t hit any bone," according to Dolores County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Halper. The boy was rushed to Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez by one of his parents and is expected to make a full recovery.

No charges are expected since the boys had been given permission to hunt prairie dogs on the property.
