A weekend recreational activity turned urgently serious Sunday afternoon when a Cortez man who was hang-gliding struck a tree east of Mancos and was injured.

Dallas Parga, general manager of fone.net, was hang-gliding with friends off Menefee Peak when he tangled with a tree in Dorothy Hesselgren’s backyard.

The Mancos ambulance responded to County Road 42.5 and transported Parga to Southwest Memorial Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said Monday that he was in stable condition but had incurred multiple rib fractures and a fractured right arm, as well as internal injuries.

Hesselgren said this was the first injury she knew of in the several years that hang-gliders have been taking off from Menefee and landing (usually) in a field beside her house.
