April 26, 2001 Beginning today, the Dolores Public Lands Office will start its spring prescribed-burn season, beginning with the school-section burn, located in the Boggy Draw area. Approximately 200 acres will be ignited west of the Boggy Draw Road, Forest Service Road 527, beginning one mile from the forest boundary. The Boggy Draw Road will serve as the east boundary to the burn; therefore a road closure may be necessary to ensure public safety. Smoke is expected to rise and disperse during the day with little visibility impact to nearby populated areas. Burning will cease by 5 p.m. However, overnight inversions may cause some smoke to settle in the Dolores River Canyon east of Dolores. The Horsecamp Burn will immediate follow the school-section burn, which could continue through the weekend. Approximately 450 acres will be ignited beginning two miles from the forest boundary along the Dolores-Norwood Road (Forest Service Road 526). Burning during the day may temporarily close Forest Service Road 258, a graveled side road off the Dolores-Norwood Road near Bean Canyon. The Forest Service and county sheriff’s office will monitor the road and may reduce speeds or temporarily close the road. Smoke should rise and disperse during the daytime, causing little visibility impacts to populated areas. Burning will cease by 5 p.m., but overnight, smoke may travel down Bean Canyon and settle near House Creek Campground. Campers will be alerted.
