David S. Palacios, currently a patrol officer with the Grand Junction Police Department, has been selected to be the next Mancos marshal.

At a special board meeting on April 3, the Mancos Town Board unanimously voted to offer Palacios the position, subject to the usual background checks. He has accepted the offer and is expected to be on duty in Mancos on Monday. With Deputy Marshal Brandon Brown, this will bring the Mancos Marshal’s Office to a force of two, with a second deputy expected to be hired later this year.

Darrold Pickens made the Law Enforcement Committee’s recommendation, observing, "We actually got good candidates, all of them." This was the second time the town had advertised the marshal’s job.

Palacio, 44, grew up in Helper, Utah, graduating from high school in Price, Utah. His father, Pete Palacios, is a retired coal-miner and his mother, Charlene Palacios, is a retired cook.

He has 14 years of law-enforcement experience in Colorado, having worked in Silverthorne, Thornton and Grand Junction. Palacios has been a firearms instructor, traffic investigator and field-training officer (mentoring rookie officers). He also has experience writing grants for law-enforcement assistance.

Palacios is "very excited" about the job. Having grown up in a small town, he says this is the kind of place he most likes to work in. He says it takes "our community, all together," to produce a safe and peaceful town.

The new marshal admits that his wife, Cynthia, may be even more ecstatic about the move than he is. Her parents, Chris and Lynn Jones, live in Cortez, and her mother is employed at the Valley Inn Nursing Home.

David and Cynthia have a blended family, with children on both sides and grandchildren on his side.
