CMS celebrates Art in the Schools

Feb. 24, 2001

CMS STUDENT Aarion Eyetoo tries his hand at the skills involved in creating a desert sunset picture.

March is a nationally observed time to celebrate art in the schools. In Cortez, the celebration started early with the show of the high school art department. The work of Cortez Middle School now graces the walls of the Cortez Center. Pieces by students in Deborah Harriman and Barbara Grist’s classes show how well students are using their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to create art.

Based on the Colorado State Art Standards, projects range from basic design and learning of the art elements and design principles to complex mask-making and painting like the masters.

The show opens officially with a reception sponsored by the 4 Corners Gifted and Talented Association on Monday, Feb. 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cortez Center on North Market. There will be voting for People’s Choice Awards also sponsored by the group, plus light refreshments and certificates for the student artists.

The public is invited to stop by and view the show through March 12.
