Feb. 24, 2001 Sam Zakhem, former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain, will be the guest speak at this year’s Montezuma County Republican’s Lincoln Day Dinner. The event will be held March 16 at the American Legion Hall, 320 N. Harrison. No-host cocktails will begin at 6, with a steak dinner at 7. A live auction will also be held as part of the evening’s activities. Immediately prior to serving as the Lincoln Day speaker, Zakhem spend time with President George W. Bush, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Persian Gulf victory. His Montezuma County appearance will give ticket-holders an opportunity to get an up-to-date view of the Middle East situation and the president’s first weeks in office. Zakhem is married, has three college-age children, and lives in Lakewood. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the American University of Cairo, Egypt; an MBA from the university of Detroit; did post-graduate studies in economics at Wayne State University, and then received his doctorate and master of arts in political science from the University of Colorado in 1970. He was elected to and served in the Colorado House of Representatives for two terms, 1974-1978, serving as the chairman of the House Finance Committee and a member of the State Affairs/Local Government Committee. Then in 1978 he was elected to and served one term in the Colorado Senate, where he chaired the Business Affairs and Labor Committee, vice-chaired the Finance committee, and was a member of the Health, Environment, Institutions and Appropriations Committee. Prior to these posts he served on the Colorado board of directors of the Small Business Administration. He also taught economics, business and political science at the University of Colorado and the University of Denver as well as other institutions. He served as the American ambassador to Bahrain from 1986 to 1989. Tickets are $20 per person and are available from any member of the Montezuma County Republican Central Committee.
