Despite search efforts, a Cortez man remained on the run Monday after escaping from custody at the Montezuma County Courtroom late Friday afternoon.

Charles Christopher Martinez, 19, broke away from a female Montezuma County sheriff’s deputy while she was escorting him from the courtroom following a bond advisement, said sheriff’s Detective Lt. Kalvin Boggs.

County court clerk Donna Sullivan said the judge had just set Martinez’s bond at $50,000 when he fled from the courtroom and out of the Justice Building.

According to court records, Martinez is wanted on four counts: distribution of a controlled substance; controlled-substance possession with intent to distribute; distribution of a controlled substance conspiracy; and controlled substance/ special offender/ deadly weapon.

Boggs said that a "special offender" charge is added any time a suspect either has access to, or is in possession of, a weapon at the time of the other alleged offenses.

Martinez discarded his prison uniform while on the run Friday and was knocking on residential doors asking for clothing, according to scanner reports. Martinez was last seen at 1212 N. Edith wearing jeans, a gray T-shirt and athletic shoes.

Boggs said law-enforcement officers followed up on a number of leads over the weekend but so far have come up with nothing.

"At this point we don’t know if he’s still in the area," Boggs said.

Martinez is described as 5 feet 11 inches, weighing 160 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, and a mustache. Martinez also has a tattoo of "ASSASSIN" on his left forearm and elbow.

Boggs said Martinez should be considered dangerous
