For the past five months, a rumor has been circulating throughout Montezuma County that Boeing, the largest aerospace company in the world, is planning on constructing a facility in the Cortez-Dolores area.

The new facility would, according to the rumor, be located in the Lewis-Pleasant View area and employ up to 3,500 people.

It sounds great, but the entire story appears groundless.

A Boeing spokeswoman, contacted by the Journal recently, said that to her knowledge Boeing had no plans of building a facility in this part of the state.

Bill Argo, the executive director of the Montezuma County Economic Develop-ment Council, said that he initially heard the rumor from a local real-estate agent five months ago, but has yet to hear anything from Boeing.

"We’re in a position to be very confidential about the project, but at this point in time I have not heard about this from Boeing," he said.

Boeing also has not formally approached the Montezuma County commissioners to vet any plans for such a facility.

The lack of local transportation or a sizable work force were cited as potential problems for this type of venture, Argo said.

Boeing is the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft and the nation’s largest NASA contractor.
