Number of DUIs drops over New Year's

Jan. 2, 2001

Both locally and statewide, New Year’s Eve was a quiet one for the Colorado State Patrol.

Montezuma County reported two DUIs for New Year’s Eve and no DUI-related crashes, said CSP Trooper David Van Bibber on Monday.

Statewide, there were two fatal accidents over the weekend, in contrast to last year’s nine deaths, said Colorado State Patrol Captain Steve Smee.

He said statewide, last year the CSP made 162 DUI arrests and this year the numbers were down to 100 arrests.

"It’s been very good," Smee said. "We’re substantially down."

According to Smee, in 1996 the CSP started a campaign called "The Heat is On," enforcing DUI laws in an effort to make the New Year’s weekend a safer time for motorists.

More than 450 troopers throughout the state were on the roads over the weekend looking for intoxicated drivers, Smee said.

Since the campaign was implemented, alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased 27 percent.

"This year we’re down another 12 percent," Smee said.
