Eight-month-old baby injured in accident dies

The death toll for a Christmas morning car crash three miles south of Cortez on Highway 666 has raised from two to three.

According to a report from the Colorado State Patrol, eight-month-old Rakiyah Lang of Towaoc died due to head and chest injuries sustained in the accident. She was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

The infant was airlifted Sunday to Saint Mary’s shortly after the crash.

According to Deanna Bond with Southwest Memorial Hospital, the infant’s mother, Heather Hatch, 21, was also transferred to Saint Mary’s to be with the infant on Tuesday evening, where she was listed in stable condition.

Bond said Hatch will be transferred back to Southwest Memorial today.

Also injured in the accident was the infant’s father, 23-year-old Travis Lang, also of Towaoc, who is listed in stable condition with neck and chest injuries at Southwest Memorial.

The driver of the other vehicle, Sylvia Jaramillo, 19, of Bloomfield, N.M., remained in fair condition Wednesday at Southwest Memorial with head, neck and chest injuries.

Eleven-year-old Lucas Jaramillo of Bloomfield died at the scene of the accident and 43-year-old Gaylyne Hatch of Towoac, a passenger in Lang’s car, died shortly after being transported to Southwest Memorial on Sunday.
