Taste of Home Cooking School Friday

Nov. 2, 1999

Journal Staff Report

If you have a taste for good food, join all the great cooks who will be on hand at the Montezuma-Cortez High school auditorium Friday.

That’s the site of the Taste of Home Cooking School, which is associated with three national magazines, Taste of Home, Country Woman and Quick Cooking. The event is being sponsored by the Cortez Journal and Empire Electric, and from all indications, a large crowd will be on hand for the two-hour program.

The recipe demonstrations will be conducted by Katie O’Rourke, a professional home economist from Homemaker Schools of Greendale, Wisc. Cortez is one of only 250 locations across the nation chosen to host the 1999 Taste of Home Cooking School Program. This year’s event will mark the 50th anniversary of the Homemaker Schools program, so plans for some extra special activities are in the works.

"I think those who attend will learn a lot, and will have a lot of fun as well," said O’Rourke. "I’ll demonstrate 10 different recipes and bring everyone up to date on what’s new in food products and kitchen appliances."

"The fun part will be the large number of prizes handed out to the crowd," added Jeanne Scrivner of the Journal "Everyone who attends will receive a free cookbook and also a free ‘gift bag’ with valuable coupons offered by national manufacturers. And there will be drawings for all sorts of other prizes as well!"

National sponsors involved in the program include Alaska Canned Salmon, Birds Eye, Campbell’s Soups, Comstock, Del Monte, Eagle Brand, Keebler, Nestle, Realemon and Tyson.

Doors will open at 5:30, and the program will begin at 6:30. Tickets are $4 in advance, at the Journal office and Empire Electric. If any tickets remain, they will be available at the door for $5 each. Past cooking schools have sold out early, though, so all interested cooks are advised to get their tickets now!
