Oct. 12, 1999

Journal Staff Report

Ole!

On Saturday, Oct. 23, food lovers’ taste buds will come alive with the taste of tamales. Plans have been underway for the past two months to conduct the "Tamales for Tomorrow" fund-raiser for United Way of Montezuma County.

Spearheading the effort are Fran Maestas, Patsy Archibeque, Pedro and Victoria Leon, and Art Norte. United Way volunteers (who are very much needed and appreciated) will gather to make an estimated 400 dozen tamales.

Meat tamales (pork and beef combined) with red chili (hot or mild) will sell for $12 per dozen. Vegetarian tamales (corn, green chili and cheese) and sweet tamales (cinnamon, sugar and raisins) will sell for $10 per dozen.

A deadline of Friday, Oct. 15, has been set for ordering tamales so that United Way can accommodate everyone who is supporting United Way through this fund-raiser. Orders can be placed by calling Fran Maestas at 882-7731; Elva Norte, 565-8741; Marilyn Volm, 565-9599; Lindy Rucker, 565-2193; the Pi–on Project, 564-1195, or Petra Lyon at 247-9444.

The tamales may be picked up on Saturday, Oct. 23, between the hours of 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Montezuma County Annex, 107 N. Chestnut, unless other arrangements have been made. Deliveries (courtesy of City market of Cortez) will be available within the Cortez city limits with a minimum order of two dozen.

For the convenience of those in the Dolores community, Anna Webster of the Naked Moose has volunteered to have the orders available between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m. Oct. 23. Please call Elva Norte at 565-8741 if you wish to pick up your order at the Naked Moose.
