Ute council election Oct. 8

Tribal council election for the Ute Mountain Ute tribe will take place October 8 for one open seat.

Council member Benjamin Lehi is running for re-election at the close of his three-year term. The incumbent, who has served two consecutive terms, will run against two challengers, Patapony Root and Manuel Heart, according to Ute Mountain Ute officials.

Root recently returned to Towaoc after working for the Southern Ute tribal government. Heart is the head of tribal plumbing and has served on the tribal council in the past.

Elections will be held at the tribal dining hall in Towaoc and is open to all Ute Mountain Ute tribal members. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to noon.

The contested seat is the only question on the ballot for this year. The winning candidate for the three-year term will be sworn in to office on November 5.

Members of the seven-person Ute Mountain Ute tribal council are Chairman Ernest House, Vice Chair Art Cuthair, Secretary Custodian Selwyn Whiteskunk, Rudy Hammond, Benjamin Lehi and White Mesa representative Eddie Dutchie Jr.
