Sept. 11, 1999 Gail Binkly and David Grant Long, popular and occasionally controversial columnists, will resume writing regular columns for the Cortez Journal. Those columns were suspended last April when the newspaper changed ownership; since then, many readers have expressed disappointment about that decision. "It's clear those columnists are important to our readers," said publisher Richard Ballantine. "They've have told us they enjoy Gail and David's thought-provoking commentary on local issues, and their columns contribute to our variety of topics and opinions, as well as drawing readers into the dialogue." "We believe in a strong opinion page," Ballantine emphasized. Binkly and Long will appear on alternating Tuesdays. They will be joined by a third staff columnist, Katharhynn Heidelberg, the Journal's editorial assistant. Heidelberg's column will run every other Thursday, alternating with Muriel Sluyter's "Straight Talk.' Columns by local naturalist Fred Blackburn, cowboy humorist Lee Pitts and regional writers will appear in the Saturday edition. |
