Betty Schutt
Betty Schutt of Cortez passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at
University Medical Center in Denver. A memorial service will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church. A reception will
follow the service.
She was born Betty Jean Diers on June 14, 1928, in
Sheboygan, Wis., to Viola Grupe Diers Henning and Harold Diers.
She married Donald Schutt on Jan. 24, 1948, and they moved
to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1954. She was employed by Reynolds Aluminum and later
by Maricopa County Public School in Arizona. She and Donald built their
retirement home in Cortez in the early 1980s. Betty was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church and was actively involved in the Cortez Christian Women’s
Club.
She is survived by her children, Mark (Vicki) Schutt of
Phoenix; Mary (John) Gleeson of Littleton, Colo. and Kathy (Paul) Turner,
also of Littleton.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, William and
Bradley Gleeson, Katie Turner and Jenny Schutt; her sister, Patricia
Runstrom of Ladysmith, Wis.; brother, Harold Diers of Tucson; stepsisters
Doris Wagner of Sheboygan; Shirley Van Ess of Waldo, Wis.; aunts Eleanore
Oehmke of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dorothy Wick and Lucille Peterman of Sheboygan;
uncle Raymond Grupe of California; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and
dear friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son Thomas
Schutt; grandsons Alexander Gleeson;s stepfather, Frank Henning; stepsister
Betty Jane (Henning) Wisman and step brother, Milton Henning. Her husband of
49 years, Donald Schutt, passed away Nov. 27, 1997.

Alice Crapo Conn
Graveside services for Alice Crapo Conn, a former longtime
Dove Creek resident, will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Peel Cemetery
beginning at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Conn passed away in Lakewood, Colo., on Monday, Oct.
30, 2000, at the age of 91.
She was born in Coalbed, Colo. on May 28, 1909, the daughter
of George W. and Harriette (Crapo) Snyder. Her husband, William Homer Conn,
preceded her in death.

Thomas Lloyd Jackson
Funeral services for Thomas Lloyd Jackson, a lifelong
resident of Dove Creek, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, at the First
Baptist Church of Dove Creek beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Don Daniels will
officiate. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation will
be at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Thomas was born to Lawrence and Eulah (Briggs) Jackson on
Oct. 2, 1914 in Paris, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on Sunday,
Oct. 29, 2000 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home. He was 86 years old.
Thomas served his community as a rancher and farmer. He was
married on July 2, 1939 to his bride, Overa Mary Ragsdale. To this union
three children were born. Thomas loved the outdoors and especially loved to
hunt. He also spent some time working for the Civilian Conservation Corp
Camps in Mesa Verde during the Depression. Thomas was a former member of the
Cortez Elks Lodge and a member of the Dove Creek First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Overa Mary Jackson, and by his
children, Verdell Jackson and his wife, Linda of Kalispell, Mont., Gary L.
Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., and Vera Deann Knuckles and her husband, Loyd of
Dove Creek, Colo. His grandchildren, Bryan Jackson of Longmont, Colo., Scott
Loyd Knuckles of Dove Creek, Colo., Shawn Dustin Jackson of Berthoud, Colo.,
April Marie DeZell of Calispell, Mont., Shelly Ann Purkat of Aztec, N.M.,
and four other great grandchildren survive Mr. Jackson. He is survived by
extended family, Viola Martin of Dove Creek, Colo., Imogene Utley of Cortez,
Colo., Hubert Jackson, of Salinas, Calif., Ira Lee Jackson of Weiser, Ida.,
Truman Jackson of Sparks, Nev., and George Jackson of Yuma, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

of Dove Creek.

Harold Bateman
Funeral services for former Cortez resident Harold Bateman,
78, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. in the
Parkview Christian Church, with Rev. David Woods officiating.
Harold Bateman was born April 4, 1922 in Drumright, Okla.,
to Mark Bateman and Martha Humphreys. He passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000
in Chickasha.
Harold grew up in Garber, Okla. He graduated from the high
school there before going into the US Army for two years. He and Juanita
Kilpatrick were married in 1945, in Seminole, Okla.
He started working in the Oklahoma oil fields in 1947.
Later, in 1956, he was transferred to Cortez, where he continued to work for
an additional 23 years. He returned to Chickasha in 1980, and retired in
1985.
Harold loved baseball, basketball, football and golf. He was
a great youth baseball coach for about 15 years while in Cortez.
Harold is survived by his wife, Juanita; two daughters,
Karen Sue Bateman of Denver and Janet Lee Rakowitz of San Antonio, Texas;
sons Kerry Lynn Bateman of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Alan Neal Bateman of
Grand Junction, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, one brother and
three sisters.
Internment will be in the Covington Cemetery in Covington,
Okla. at 2 p.m. under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home (405-224-1344).
Nelma Finley
Services for Nelma Finley, who passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1
2000, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Ertel Memorial

Freelin Martin Portner
Freelin Martin Portner was born May 15, 1903, to William and
Olga Lackmann Portner, in Deadwood, S.D., where his father was one of the
early miners to work in the world-renowned Homestake Gold Mine. He passed
away Oct. 27 in Durango, at the age of 97.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m. at
the Kingdom Hall, 2537 County Road 203, Durango. Steven Geiger will
officiate.
He is survived by one son, four daughters and spouses, 22
grandchildren and two generations of great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Arline Portner,
two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; one grandson; one
granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.
Audra Emerald Hamilton
Funeral services for Audra Emerald Hamilton, a 39-year
resident of Dolores, will be held on Wednesday, Nov.1, at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Summit Ridge
Cemetery.
Audra was born on May 10, 1911, in Cedar County, Mo., to
Jasper and Nancy (Rose) Williams. She passed away on October 27, 2000, at
the Mesa View Retirement Home in Cortez. She was 89.
Audra and her husband were dairy farmers and later farmed
wheat and beans. For several years she worked in the nursery at the
Methodist Church.
Audra is survived by her children, Margaret Brubeck and
her husband, Arnold of Lamar, Colo., Zella McGettrick and her husband, Veryl
of Springfield, Mo., and Maurice Hamilton of Cortez. She is also survived by
six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her
loving husband, Harold, one grandson, Gene Brubeck, and one sister.
Ruth O. Maichel
Funeral services for Ruth O. Maichel, 87, of Cortez and a
longtime resident of Williams, Ariz., will be held Friday, Oct. 27, at the
Canyon Chapel Foursquare Church in Williams beginning at 1 p.m. Interment
will follow at the Williams Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Malone will officiate.
Ruth went into the arms of her Savior on Tuesday, Oct. 24,
2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. She was born in Mulberry,
Kan., on Dec. 21, 1912, to Joseph and Ida Matilda Greer. She married Glenn
"Mike" Maichel on Oct. 4, 1929; they had two children, Robert
Maichel and Joan Arriaga. They moved to Williams in 1945.
Ruth attended L.I.F.E. College in Los Angeles and was
ordained as a minister of the Foursquare Gospel Church. She served the Lord
in Northern Arizona planting churches, preaching, working with the Native
Americans, and helping out wherever she was needed.
Those who knew "Sister Ruth" were blessed by her
servant's heart and her passion for her Savior.
Ruth moved to Cortez in September 1999 and passed away here
after suffering a stroke.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her son and
daughter; and two grandchildren. She is survived by four granddaughters,
Sandi (Maichel) Teter of Poncha Springs, Colo., Cindy (Maichel) Slyter of
Cortez, Wendi Maichel of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Shelley Manacso of
Williams, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Robert "Bob" B. Williams
Bob Williams of Grand Junction (formerly of Norwood), passed
away Oct. 21, 2000. He was 82. A memorial service will be held on Friday,
Oct. 27, at the Christian Church in Norwood at 2 p.m. Following the
graveside service, family and friends are invited to the Community Building
for a luncheon.
Bob was born May 13, 1918, to Roger and Kate Williams. He
was a decorated soldier who fought in eight major battles in World War II,
and shot the Howitzer, the largest gun, in the war.
He married Lois Hogle on July 24, 1946. They had three
children.
He was also a boxer and held the title of division champion
in boxing. He was a retired rancher who loved his ranch in Shenandoah. Bob
broke horses for his many friends and family members. He was one of the last
"true" cowboys, and enjoyed the rodeo, where he was a top bronc
rider in his younger years.
He was a friend to everyone he met. Many people in the area
knew him as "Uncle Bob" or "Cowboy Bob."
He is survived by his daughter, Jo Anne of Farmington, N.M.;
sons, Floyd of Grand Junction and Larry, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; a sister,
Birdie of Cortez; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, on Aug.
15, 1972, four brothers, four sisters and one grandchild.
Alma Duran
Former area resident Alma Duran passed away on Sunday, Oct.
22, at 1 a.m. Cremation is being arranged. She is survived by many family
members in Cortez and the surrounding area, including her son, Dillard
Duran.
Clarence Mirabel
A Mass of Christian burial for Clarence Mirabel of Cortez
will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary
Catholic Church. Father Joseph McGuinness will be the celebrant. Interment
will follow in Cortez Cemetery, with military rites performed by the
American Legion Post No. 75. A dinner will follow at the church.
Mr. Mirabel was born July 30, 1919. He passed away on Oct.
20, 2000, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Beneranda, of
Cortez; sons, Daniel (Dorothy); Tommy (Cecilia); Joseph (Verna); George and
his girlfriend Sunshine Hargrave; daughters, Mary Ann (Donald) and Della
Mirabel; two brothers; one sister; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Montezuma.
Hil Strofer
Graveside services for Hil Strofer are scheduled for
Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor David
Dahl of the Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate.
He passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Southwest
Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 84.
Thomas 'Tom' Wood
Thomas I. Wood passed away at his home in Cortez on Friday,
Oct. 20,2000, at the age of 82. He was born in Salmon, Idaho, on Dec. 11,
1918, to John Albert and Helen (Laswell) Wood.
Tom earned a B.S. in pharmaceuticals from the Idaho State
University. He married Helen L. Downey in Pocatello, Idaho, on April 11,
1938. They had three daughters.
They moved to Spokane, Wash., where Tom was employed as a
pharmacist for over 40 years. He retired in 1982 and loved to travel with
his wife. Helen passed away in 1990 in Spokane. He married Arene E. Kern in
1991. They resided in Idaho in the summer months and spent winters in Mesa,
Ariz. In 1999 they moved to Cortez.
Tom is survived by his wife, Arene, of Cortez, daughters,
Diane Middlebrook Dejarassi of San Francisco, Colleen Dae of Spokane,
Michole Goldman of Los Altos, Calif., stepdaughter, Mary K. Hughes of
Cortez, and stepson, James C. Kern of McAll, Ida. He is also survived by
three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one step-grandchild, and two
step-great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife,
parents, and brother.
Interment services will be in Spokane, Wash.
Gloria P. Lopez
Funeral services for Gloria P. Lopez, a lifetime resident of
Mancos, are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21, at the St. Margaret Mary
Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez
Cemetery.
There will be a Rosary service and viewing on Friday, Oct.
20, at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Father Kevin Novack
will officiate.
Gloria was born to José and Mary (Ulibarri) Martinez on
Feb. 4, 1945, in Civola, N.M. She passed away on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 at
the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos at the age of 55.
Gloria suffered the loss of her husband, Victor Andrew
Lopez, in July of this year. A large loving family survives her. Her mother,
Mary C. Ulibarri of Bloomfield, N.M., survives. Also surviving are her
children, Connie Paredes of Cortez, Carol Lopez of Cortez, Debra Brito of
Summit Ridge, Johnny Lopez of Cortez, and Dolores Lopez of Summit Ridge.
She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Tony Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M., Robert
Ulibarri of Bloomfield, N.M., Gilbert Martinez of Denver, Roman Martinez of
Bloomfield, N.M., and her sister Maria "Nina" Ballon of
Bloomfield, N.M., survive her.

William "Bill" Beard
Memorial services for William Leonard "Bill" Beard
of Cortez will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel
beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Larry Chappell of the Lighthouse Baptist Church
will be officiating.
Bill was born to Leonard Samuel and Gladys (Pettid) Beard on
April 5, 1917, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct.
15, 2000. He was 83.
Bill's father moved from Iowa in order to farm when Bill was
young. After being discharged from the military, Bill returned to Colorado
and moved to Cortez. He loved this area and its recreation of hunting and
fishing. He liked to mine and staked a few small gold-panning claims. Bill
was a master electrician and helped to set up and wire all of the electrical
work at the Rico Argentine Mine.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Edith LaVerne Beard of
Pueblo, Colo. Also surviving are his children, David William Beard and his
wife, Irene of Craig, Colo., Jerome Richard Beard of Clifton, Colo., and
Barbara Costello and her husband, James of Cedar Point, Utah. His
grandchildren, Robert Shannon Martin, Lynn Shelton Martin, Lex Beard, David
Beard, Robert Beard; two step-grandchildren, Victor Costello, and Walter
Costello also survive.
Preceding William in death was his grandson, William Shane
Martin; a brother Robert Beard; and both of his parents.
Patty R. Maynes
Patty R. Maynes, 75, a retired legal secretary for the U.S.
Labor Department, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000 at her home in Fort Worth,
Texas. Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20, at the Cortez
Cemetery in Cortez, beginning at 2 p.m.
Mrs. Maynes was born Oct. 12, 1925 in Abilene, Texas. She
graduated from Abilene High School and attended the University of Texas. She
was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth. Mrs. Maynes
was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Maynes in 1983. She is
survived by one son, Douglas B. Adams of Iowa City, Iowa.

Donald Wells
Funeral services for Donald Dean Wells will be Saturday,
Oct. 21, in Tulsa, Okla.
Donald was born in Lockney, Texas, on Feb. 8, 1917, to Omar
and Ruby Wells. He married Bertha LaVon Randol May 14, 1936, in Cortez. He
departed this life on Oct. 16, 2000, at his home in Tulsa.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; daughters: Imogene and
James Daves of Cahone, and Bernadean and Jack Sweet of Tulsa, Okla; 13
grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Billy Eldon Froman
Billy Eldon Froman, 70, of Crowley County, Colo., passed
away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct.
17 at Griffy Family Funeral Home (719-263-4221).
He is survived by his wife, four children and their
spouses; four step children; 19 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one
brother and one sister.
Louise Higgins
Funeral services for Louise Margeritte Higgins, a longtime
resident of Lewis, will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Conway Wood will be officiating. Interment
service will follow at the Lewis Cemetery. Visitation is set for Friday
afternoon between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel.
Louise was born to Marion Arthur Miller and Minerva
Elizabeth (Williams) Miller on Aug. 21, 1910 in Wheeler County, Texas. She
passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000 at the
age of 90.
Louise was a dedicated homemaker to her family and enjoyed
gardening, canning, and quilting. Louise loved to play basketball in high
school. She was wed to Allen Denton "Dent" Higgins on July 26,
1928 in Cheyenne, Okla. Dent and Louise were married for 70 years. Her
loving husband preceded her in death last year.
A large loving family is left behind, including her seven
sons, Millard Higgins of Dolores, Colo., Revis Higgins of Casa Grande,
Ariz., D. Royce Higgins of Cortez, Colo., Ervil Higgins of Lewis, Colo., Don
Higgins of Bloomfield, N.M., Myrle Higgins of Peoria, Ariz., Billy Higgins
of Cortez, Colo.; and by her daughter, Arvita Higgins of Albuquerque, N.M.
She is also survived by 36 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 6
great great-grandchildren. Her brother, Marion A. Miller of Lubbock, Tex.,
and her sister, Geneva Brown of San Jose, Calif. also survive her.
Mary Blackhorse
Funeral services for Mary Blackhorse, 78, of Montezuma Creek,
Utah, will be held Friday, Oct. 13, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10
a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Mrs. Blackhorse passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on
Monday, Oct. 9, 2000. She was born July 1, 1922.
Lou Ann Evelyn Nicholson
Funeral services for Lou Ann Evelyn Nicholson will be on
Monday, Oct. 16, at the Cortez First United Methodist Church beginning at 10
a.m. Reverend Lynn Evans will be officiating. Interment service will be on
Tuesday, Oct. 17,at the Kim Cemetery in Kim, Colo. Visitation will be held
at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 14, between 5 and 7 p.m.
Evelyn was born to Jesse Oran and Sarah Eleanor (Goodwin)
Doolen on Aug. 23, 1905 in Paducah, Tex. She passed away at the Valley Inn
Nursing Home on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000. She was 95 years old.
Evelyn and her husband, Ace Nicholson, owned a filling
station in Cortez where Evelyn did all of the bookkeeping for their
business. She also worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Patterson Office
Supplies in Cortez. She was active with the Ute Mountain Study Club,
Business and Professional Women's Club, and a member of the United Methodist
Church. She truly enjoyed her Sunday drives with a special group of ladies
who she would take out to lunch each Sunday. She was very involved in her
family, attending all family activities. She loved to play the violin and
piano.
Her husband, Ace Nicholson, preceded her in death. She is
survived by one brother, Lorin Doolen of Port Aransas, Tex. and one brother
has also preceded her in death. She will be missed by her many nieces and
nephews, Larry Doolen of Aurora, Colo., Chuck Doolen of El Paso, Tex., David
Doolen of New Castle, Colo., Sarah Bormuth of Billingham, Wash., Dona
Wittwer of Mancos, Janie Dixon of Texas, and LaMoine Sammons of Texas.

Robert Hemp Root
Funeral services for Robert Hemp Root, a lifelong resident of
Towaoc, will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning
at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery.
Robert was born into the Tom and Effie (Hemp) Root family on
Sept. 2, 1935, in Towaoc. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in
Cortez on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the age of 65.
Robert was a laborer for the Ute Mountain Tribe. He had many
loves, some of which included playing bingo and hand game and participating in
Sun Dances.
Both of Robert's parents have preceded him in death. He
leaves behind his brothers, Steve Root, Alfred Wall, and Wilbert Root, all of
Towaoc; and his sisters, Virginia Root of Towaoc, Genevieve Root Thompson of
Ignacio, and Pearl Root Laner of Towaoc. Also surviving is one close aunt,
Jessie Root House of Towaoc, and many nephews and nieces.
Sherry Lynn McBride Kibel
Funeral services for Sherry Lynn McBride Kibel, a Cortez
resident, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel
beginning at 2 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Sherry was born to Guy Frank McBride and Mary Lou (Lokey)
McBride on July 10, 1950 in Tyler, Texas. She died at her home in Cortez on
Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the age of 50.
David Lee
David Lee, a former Cortez resident, passed away on Oct.
7, 2000, in the Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Texas. He was 64.
A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at 2
p.m. in the Cortez Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by VFW Post
4031 of Cortez. Visitation is set for Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Cortez Four
Corners Funeral Chapel, from 4 to 9 p.m.
Helen Norma Amidon
Memorial services for Helen Norma Amidon, who died Oct.
6, 2000, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Durango

James R. Taylor
Memorial services for James R. Taylor will be held at the

Lee Trujillo
A memorial Mass will be held for Lee Trujillo on Sunday,
Oct. 15, at the St. Jude Catholic Church in Dove Creek beginning at 11:15
a.m. Rosary and Mass services will be held in Abiquiu, N.M., with the
interment to be at the Abiquiu Community Cemetery.
Lee Trujillo was born on Oct. 14, 1912, to Jose Zacarias
Trujillo and Vicentita (Madrid) Trujillo in Abiquiu, N.M. He passed away at
his home in Dove Creek on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000. Lee was 87.
Lee worked for many years as a sheepherder. He is dearly
missed by his companion of 23 years, Virginia Ortega. He is also survived by
his children: Jose Trujillo, Jr., of Greeley, Colo., and Alfonso Trujillo,
Dorida Vinson, Fred Trujillo and Larry Trujillo, all of Colorado. He leaves
behind 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren and
five step-great-grandchildren. His sister, Rosaura Trujillo Martinez of
Espanola, N.M., survives him.
He was preceded in death by his wife and both of his
parents.
McKean Peabody
Private family memorial services for McKean Peabody will be
held at the Towaoc Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. Services will be
officiated by Jerald Peabody and Terry Knight.
McKean was born on June 30,1929, to Isaac and Patty (Suma)
Peabody in Towaoc, Colo. He passed away in June of this year. He was 70.
McKean was a retired cattleman with the Ute Indian Tribe. He
was married to Loretta (Thompson) Peabody, who preceded him in death. His
parents also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Jerald
and Kathryn Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., Melvin and Janis Peabody of Ignacio,
Colo., Ike Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., Tyrone Peabody of Baltimore, Md.,
LueWanna Peabody of Grand Junction, Colo., and Michelle Peabody of Denver,
Colo. He is survived also by 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
His brother, Joe Peabody of Towaoc, Colo., survives as well
as numerous nieces and nephews.
Harry Bruce Waugh
A wake service for Harry Waugh will be held at 6 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 12, at Mr. Waugh’s residence, 305 E. Montezuma in Mancos. Harry Bruce Waugh, a
resident of Mancos, passed away Sept. 29, 2000 at his residence. He was
63.
Mr. Waugh was born Aug. 2, 1937, in Denver.
He married Bonnie Lee Smith on May 23, 1959 in Denver. Prior
to his marriage, he had served in the U.S. Navy for four years, stationed at
Beeville, Texas.
Mr. Waugh enjoyed working for his uncle, who founded the PET
City stores in Denver. He and his family had previously lived in Montrose,
Colo., and in Missiouri.
He also enjoyed stockcar and barrel racing with his wife
Bonnie; animals, hunting in his early years, helping people spiritually to
know God, and helping any way he could. He loved nature, and enjoyed his
privacy too.
Mr. Waugh was an intelligent man with a great sense of
humor. He was open minded, a great teacher, and an outstanding human being.
Harry Bruce Waugh is survived by a son, Guy Waugh of Alaska;
daughters, Linda "Pumpkin" Luce of Mancos; Debora Waugh of
Burlington, Vermont; Denice Waugh; and granddaughters, Amanda Lee and
Jessica.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife
Bonnie on Feb. 6, 1995 in Dolores; two infant sons, Kenny and Eddie;
grandfather Harry Munger and paternal grandmother.
Van N. "Nate" Kitchens
III
Military services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 12:30
p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Cortez for Dolores resident Van N.
"Nate" Kitchens III. Memorial services will be in Orange, Texas.
Nate died on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, as the result of an automobile
accident. He was born in Orange, Texas, on Jan. 18, 1964, the son of Van N.
Kitchens Jr. and Elaine McCray Kitchens.
Nate was a member of 12th Street Missionary
Baptist Church in Orange. He was a Persian Gulf veteran and an active member
of the 928th National Guard.
Survivors include his father, Van N. Kitchens Jr., of
Birchtree, Mo.; his mother, Elaine Thompson of Jefferson, Texas; a son, Van
N. Kitchens IV of Bourbon, Mo.; his sister, Kim Ware of Bolivar, Mo.; and
his grandmother, LaVerne McCray of Orange, Texas.
Bonnie Thelma McNutt
Graveside services for Bonnie Thelma McNutt will be held
on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt
Zumwalt of the Cortez Church of Christ will be officiating.
Bonnie was born on March 5, 1909, to William Elmer and
Mary Matilda (Burk) Orurk in Stonington, Colo. She passed away on Oct. 1,
2000, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 91.
Bonnie was married to her beloved spouse, Gordon McNutt,
for over 60 years. Gordon preceded Bonnie in death in 1987. She is survived
by her sons, Floyd McNutt of Cortez, and Ed McNutt and his wife, Gayle, of
Cortez. She is also survived by five grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
one grandson, two brothers, three sisters, and one daughter-in-law.
Lillie Wilson Yazzie
Lillie Wilson Yazzie of Immanuel Mission, Ariz., passed
away Sept. 28, 2000, in the Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, N.M.
She was 71.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. in
the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Cortez, with the Rev. Larry Chapel
officiating. Interment will follow at the Immanuel Mission Cemetery,
Sweetwater, Ariz.
Mrs. Yazzie was born to the Salt Clan and the Near Water
Clan, the daughter of James and Elaine Scott Wilson, on Oct. 16, 1928, in
Sweetwater. Mrs. Yazzie lived in Cortez for 13 years.
She is survived by her husband, Donald, of Immanuel
Mission; children, Irene (Kenneth) White of Mexican Water, Ariz.; Ben
(Katie) Yazzie of Cortez; Dan Yazzie of Cortez; Vicki (Sheldon) of Towaoc;
Jackson (Nancy) Yazzie of Aneth, Utah; and Lorraine (George) Williams of
Sweetwater. She is also survived by one sister, two brothers, 32
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephew and many
dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister,
three brothers, and her children: Bennie C. Benally, David C. Benally,
Calvin Yazzie, Betty Yazzie, Alvin Yazzie and Baby Girl Benally.

Michael Lynn Fisher
Memorial services for Michael Lynn Fisher, 29, of
Dolores, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel
beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Santiago Lopez will conduct the services.
Michael was born at Burbank, Calif., on Feb. 27, 1971, to
Michael Lee Fisher and Kathy Stowers Fisher. After the death of his father
at the age of 1, Michael moved to Colorado with his mother and big sister
Gina.
When Michael was 3, his mother married Jimmy Muniz and
Dolores became his home. He graduated from Dolores High School in 1990. He
then did construction and drywall work throughout the area.
Michael loved the mountains and would go camping, fishing
and hunting every opportunity he could, which was what he was doing at the
time of his untimely death. He died as a result of an automobile accident in
the mountains on Sept. 23, 2000.
Survivors are his parents, Jimmy and Kathy Muniz of
Dolores; sisters, Gina Koerber and her husband, Leo, of Dolores, and Anna
Koellen and her husband, Danny, also of Dolores. His two nieces, Brittnie
Fulks and Kyra Koellen; special friend, Margie, all of Dolores; his
grandfather Carl Massey of Mancos; grandmother Ann Stowers of Boise, Ida.;
and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mickey;
grandmothers, Fay Massey, Norma Jean St. Germaine, and Tomacita Muniz.

Georgetta Brossard
Graveside services for Georgetta R. Brossard are scheduled
for Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m.
Georgetta Brossard was born on June 25, 1920, to George and
Ethel (Hooser) Reynolds in Luna, N.M. Georgetta passed away on Wednesday,
Sept. 27, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She was 80.
Georgetta was a bus driver for the school district for many
years.
She is survived by her loving husband, Lyle Brossard; and by
her children, Richard and Cena Brossard of Bloomfield, N. M., Larry and Jane
Brossard of Henderson, Nev., Joe and Linda Brossard of New Strawn, Kan., and
Gary and Mythra Brossard of Colorado Springs, Colo. Georgetta is survived by
her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Alvin and
Leon Reynolds of Eager, Ariz. also survive her, as well as her sister, Adell
Wiltbanks of Eager, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, one son,
one grandson, three brothers, and one sister.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Orval Jahnke
Memorial services for Orval Louis Jahnke will be held at a
later date.
Orval was born on Sept. 28, 1920, to Louis William Jahnke
and Hulda (Mohling) Jahnke in Fort Morgan, Colo. He passed away on his 80th
birthday, Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in
Cortez.
Orval was wed to Mary Daisy Patrick at Port Chicago, Calif.,
on Nov. 5, 1944. Together they had shared 55 years of marriage. From this
union were born three children.

Juana M. Cox
Graveside services will be held in the Goodman Point
Cemetery, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, for Juana M. Cox, of Clifton,
Colo.
Mrs. Cox passed away Sept. 25, 2000, in Colorado Springs at
the age of 67.
She was born on Feb. 4, 1933 in Cortez, to Olney Story and
Marie Shields Story.
She attended schools in the Cortez area, graduating from
Dolores High School in 1950. She later attended Fort Lewis A&M College.
In 1951, she married Jack Weaver and raised two sons. She
resided in Sacramento, Calif. for several years before moving back to
Colorado, and had lived in Clifton.
In 1975, she married Glen Cox, and lived in Cañon City for
five years prior to returning to the Western Slope.
She worked as a land manager with the Bureau of Land
Management.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her sons, Richard (Carol) Weaver of
Cañon City and Steven (Cindy) Weaver of Carbondale, Colo.; four
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She is also survived by her brothers, Kiergan (Leona) Story
of Phoenix; Theron (Kate) Story of Cortez and Keith (Jean) Story of Canon
City; sister, Janelle (Don) Olson of McCook, Neb.; and many nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.

Courtland Chester Fellers
Courtland Chester Fellers, 84, died Sept. 18, 2000, in
Mancos. Mr. Fellers lived in the area since 1969.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and
cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Mr. Fellers was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Denver, the son of
Clinton and Ruth Fellers. He met and married Dorothea Elizabeth Fellers in
1944.
He was an active member of the ranching community and a
member of both the Breen and Marvel grange halls.
He also was a member of the Colorado Mounted Rangers and a
community 4-H leader.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and
Doug Ramsey of Hesperus; daughter Judy Seidel of Las Cruces, N.M.;
grandchildren Cassie and Travis Ramsey of Hesperus; Jud Wright of Las
Cruces; Jill and Linda of Las Cruces; and Nancy; and many
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea Elizabeth
Fellers, and a brother, Byron Fellers.

Helen Mauler
Helen Mauler of Denver, Colo., died July 22, 2000, at the
age of 96. She was born in Silverton, Colo., in 1904, to Frank and Susan
Mauler.
Helen grew up and attended school in Mancos. She attended
college in Greeley to become a teacher, which she didn’t really like.
So she went to Denver and accepted a temporary position with
Denver Tramway. It took her 52 years to get the work done.
Even after her retirement she continued to assist the Denver
Tramway Co. with the retirement of other employees. The highlight was
writing a check for $2 million to cover the company’s retirement fund.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy, of Denver and
sister-in-law, Betty Mauler, of Mancos, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Frank, brother
George and half-sister Laura.
Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Mancos.
Paul Lyle Kemph
Paul Lyle Kemph of Denver passed away on Sept. 10, 2000. He
was born on Dec. 16, 1952, in Chicago, Ill. He was 47 years old.
A private ceremony will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 2
p.m. Mike Forshee will officiate.
He is survived by his mother, Delores Judge of Cortez;
father, Paul Kemph of Chicago; sisters, Lorraine Lee and husband, Ted, of
DeWitt, Mich. and Lydia McAfee and husband, Buzz, of Cortez; and his
brother, Dennis Judge and wife, Vonda of Cortez.
He is also survived by his aunt, Beverly and uncle, Harold
of Lansing, Mich.; his aunt, Florence McComore of Chicago; and 10 nephews
and nieces.
Angela Frances Emrick
Angela Frances Emrick was born to Ralph and Angela (Starichca)
Mance on Aug. 21, 1921, in Milwaukee, Wis. She passed away on Sept. 21,
2000, at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, Colo. She was 79.
Angela was joined in matrimony to Donald Hayes Emrick on
Aug. 31, 1951 in Albuquerque, N.M. She loved to read and never ceased to
expand her knowledge.
She loved the outdoors and especially loved to fish. Angela
loved to travel and see the United States. She was a devoted fan of
basketball.
Angela is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Donald
Emrick of Cortez, and her daughters; Joy D. Maase of Durango, and Patty and
husband, Noel Savignac of Albuquerque, New Mex., and grandson Scott Maase of
Campbell, Calif. She is also survived by her brother, Ralph Mance Jr. of
Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister,
Aubrey Costello, who passed away last month.
A private family memorial service is tentatively being
planned. through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Lodema Hendrickson
Memorial services for Mary Lodema Martin Hendrickson,
who passed away on Sept. 19, 2000, will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct.
20 in the Calvin Denton Room of the Empire Electric Association, 801 N.
Broadway. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's seven years ago, but was active and
enjoyed travel for the first five years after the diagnosis.
She was 69, having been born to Jewell and Sterling P.
Martin in Clovis, N.M., on Jan 25, 1931. She was a 1948 graduate of Mancos
High School, attended the old Fort Lewis, and in 1953, graduated from the
University of Hawaii.
She met William Hendrickson while they were both
employed at Mesa Verde. They married in Hawaii during the time he was on
active Navy duty because of the Korean conflict. He helped with her final
year of her studies in Hawaii, and as a skilled home-maker, she later
enabled his graduate study in Oregon. The family followed his work as a
teacher and an ecologist and manager in several national parks.
Lodema was a member of the Durango Unitarian
Fellowship.
Her husband, their three children, two grandchildren;
as well as her mother and three brothers survive her.
Memorial contrtibutions may be made to the Alzheimer's
Association, or organization of personal choice. The Alternative Society
of Farmington, N.M., has assisted with arranging cremation.
Herbert Miller
Funeral services for Herbert Dayton Miller are
scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist
Church of Cortez. Pastor Dan Rhodes will be officiating. Interment
services will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Visitation will be held at
the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Friday, Sept. 22, between 7 and 9 p.m.
Herb was born to Clyde and Irene (Dehaas) Miller in
Denver on April 20, 1930. He went to be with the Lord on Sept. 15, 2000.
He died at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. He was 70.
Herb was dearly loved. Many remember him from his time
employed as the produce manager for City Market. He was a faithful member
of the First Baptist Church in Cortez. He gave of his time to help keep
the grounds of the church looking beautiful.
He belonged to the Gideon Bible Society. He spent his
time of pleasure fishing, gardening, watching sports, and spending time
with his grandsons, whom he dearly loved. He was a true Colorado Rockies
and Denver Broncos fan.
His bride, Bettie (Nichols) Dayton, of 51 years
survives him. Also surviving are his children: Tommy and Candace Tidwell
of Mt. Peasant, Texas, Rick and Patti Miller of Wheaton, Ill., and his
grandsons; Zack and Cody Tidwell of Mt. Peasant, Texas, and Ryan, Brad,
and Colin Miller of Wheaton, Ill. He is also survived by brothers and
sisters Clyde and Esther Miller of Montrose, James Miller of Montrose,
Margaret Brown of Montrose, Alan and Laura Zeigel of Denver, Ron and
Virginia Luttrell of Greeley, and Lucy and Luther Miller of Olathe. He
leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family that will miss
him.

Bernice C. Davis
Bernice Catherine Davis was born on May 2, 1915, to
Elwood and Jennie (McKnight) Searcy in McKiney, Texas. On Saturday, Sept.
16, 2000, Bernice passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos.
She was 85.
Bernice married Henry Thomas Davis on Aug. 12, 1933, in
Guymon, Okla. She had been a resident of Cortez since 1974. She was an
active member to TOPS for several years and enjoyed crafts until her
eyesight failed.
Bernice is survived by her children, Lynn and Martha
Davis of Morse, Texas; Bob and Marilyn Davis of Waco, Texas; Shirley and
Frank Nechero of Gallup, N.M., and Hazel and Richard Gallavan of Cortez.
Her brothers, Cleo Searcy of Amarillo, Texas, and L.H. Searcy of Ft.
Worth, Texas, also survive. She leaves behind seven grandchildren, 10
great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces an nephews. She has been preceded
in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, in March 1950; sister, Viola
Coffee; and great-grandson, Chad Davis.

Leona Harmony Baker
Funeral services, "homegoing from this earth to
heaven," for Leona Harmony Baker, a longtime resident of Cortez, will
be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Elder
Lyman Black of the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church will be officiating.
Interment will follow the funeral service at the Cortez Cemetery.
The family invites friends and family to join them in a
fellowship following the services at the home of Tony Hamilton, Leona's
grandson, 706 W. North in Cortez.
Leona was born to Daniel Gantz and Jessie Kate
(Churchill) Gantz on May 21, 1909, in Madison, Wis. She passed away at her
home in Cortez on Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 surrounded by family and hospice
workers. She was 91.
On Sept. 12, 1927, Leona wed Horace Levi Baker in
Antelope Hills, Okla. She was a member of the Lakeview Grange and the
Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. She loved to garden, bake bread, can and
crochet.
Leona is survived by her loving family: her son,
Charles and Rosa Baker of Coleman, Texas; son, Don and Maxine Baker of
Takysie Lake, British Columbia; daughter, Darlene and Tim Cumings of
Richmond, Texas; and daughter, Nadene and Jack Hamilton of Cortez.
Thirteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three
great-great-grandchildren also survive Leona, as do two sisters, Sadie Mae
Oneto of Angels Camp, Calif., and Jessie Lucille Bray of Richmond, Mo. She
was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Horace; son,
Kenneth Howard Baker, a grandson, Gary Don Baker, and two brothers,
Theodore Edwin Gantz and Eugene Ralph Gantz. Leona will be forever loved
and missed for her generosity, her beautiful roses and homemade bread.

Jack D. Clark
A celebration of the life of Jack D. Clark, 23, will be
held Saturday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. at the Highway Bible Church, located
at Highway 666 and County Road N, Montezuma County. Shelby Smith will
officiate, along with other friends of Jack’s.
Jack Clark was born on Oct. 1, 1976, in Durango. He
passed away in Phoenix on Sept. 9, 2000, seven weeks after a tragic
industrial accident.
His survivors include his wife, Becky Clark of Phoenix;
his son, who is due to arrive in October; mother, Jeannie Olien; sisters,
Ranada and brother-in-law, Charles Swindle of Cortez, and Tiandra Fields,
of Farmington, N.M.; stepfather, Jamie Fields; grandparents Jim and Jan
Fields, all of Farmington; grandmothers, Venice Clark and Marjorie
Roberts; nephew and niece, Charlie Franklin and Alyssa Jo Swindle, and
numerous other friends and family in Cortez, Durango and Farmington.
His father, Jack Clark, preceded him in death at the
age of 26. He was also preceded in death by his grandfather, Curtis Clark.
Jack will be forever loved and greatly missed.
Layton Todd Graf
Funeral services for Layton Todd Graf, a lifelong
resident of Mancos, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Mancos Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Services will begin at 10 a.m. with
Mr. Leslie White officiating. Interment will follow at the Webber Cemetery
in Mancos.
The community of Mancos is grieving the loss of this
young boy born to Dee Jay and Kathlene (Church) Graf on May 6, 1992, in
Cortez. He passed away after an accident on Sept. 9, 2000, at the
Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was eight years old.
Layton was a special young man who loved drawing and
spending time with his dad.
Surviving Layton is his beloved family; parents, Dee
and Kathlene Graf of Mancos.; and his three sisters, Emily, Kae Lynn, and
Sadie Graf of Mancos. He is also survived by his grandparents, Robert and
Bea Graf of Mancos, and Mrs. Myra Church of Delta, Colo. He leaves behind
extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him and
will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his granddad, Kenneth
Church of Bullhead City, Ariz.

Bernice Rose
Bernice Rose passed away on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at
the age of 92. Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home
and will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m.
Bernice was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Evans in
Bluehill, Neb., on Feb. 8, 1908, and passed away after a lengthy illness.
Bernice made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Jack
Niemann.
She married Jim Rose in 1926 and to this union were
born two children, her daughter, Dee, of Cortez and son, Jim, of Glendale,
Ariz. After Bernice and Jim moved to Cortez, they bought the Texaco
service station. The war was on and employees were hard to come by, so
Bernice worked at the station with Jim.
Her true love was flying. She bought a Taylor craft
plane and spent many happy hours in the sky.
Bernice and Jim ultimately separated and she moved to
Ventura, Calif., where she was owner-operator of a drapery shop.
She became seriously ill in 1981, and made her home
with Dee and Jack in Hayward, Calif., from that time on. The three of them
moved to Cortez in 1993, and while her memory wasn’t good, she delighted
in seeing some of the things from days gone by.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Jack Niemann;
her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Eileen Rose; a brother; a sister; two
brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Edna Rose Swisher Lea
Funeral services for Edna Rose Swisher Lea, a longtime
resident of Mancos, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the United
Methodist Church of Mancos beginning at 10 a.m.
The Rev. Ora Dailey of the Mancos United Methodist
Church will be officiating.
Interment services will be at the Bayfield Cemetery
following the funeral service.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the
Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Edna was born on March 30, 1924, to Alvin and Martha (Hubley)
Swisher in Gypsum, Kan.
She passed away at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in
Cortez on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at the age of 76.
On Aug. 17, 1946, Edna was united in marriage to her
sweetheart, James Calvin Lea, in Salina, Kan., while he was a master
sergeant in the Army Air Corps.
Edna always prided herself in a clean house and a real
love for "Rockies" baseball. She was a part of the VFW auxiliary
for many years.
Surviving Edna is her beloved husband, James C. Lea of
Mancos, Colo.
Edna is also survived by her daughters, Cathy L. Topper
of Cortez, and Carol Lucero and her husband, Orly, of Cortez.
Her grandchildren, Larry Allen Lea and his wife, Connie
of Cortez.; Felice Lucero of Cortez; great-grandchildren, Tabatha Sackett
and her husband, Kenny of Cortez, Colo., Waylon L. Bennett of Cortez; and
great great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Drew Sackett of Cortez, all survive
their grandmother.
Edna is survived by her sister, Cleda Bethe and her
husband, Paul of Gypsum, Kan., sister, Opal Jean Olsen of Janesville,
Wis., sister, Dolores Merrill and her husband Bill of Forest Grove, Ore.,
brother, Lowell Swisher and his wife, Alice of Gypsum, Kan., brother,
Russell Swisher and his wife, Evelyn of Irvine, Calif., and sister-in-law
Opal Ellsbury of Farmington, N.M.

Bruce N. Jacobson
Memorial services for Bruce Norman Jacobson, a 12-year
resident of Cortez, will be held at a later undetermined date.
Bruce was born to Norman and Evelyn (Wessman) Jacobson
on Nov. 25, 1929, in Rockford, Ill. Bruce passed away in his home on Sept.
9, 2000, in Cortez. He was 70.
Bruce was an active lawyer in the city of Cortez. His
love was the game of golf.
He is survived by his children; a daughter, Holly
Steinmeyer of Staunton, Ill.; and his three sons; Robert Jacobson of
Columbia, Md.; Andrew Jacobson of Byson, Ill.; and Timothy Jacobson of
Byson, Ill.

Margaret Shull
Margaret Mary Roark Shull passed away Wednesday, Sept.
6, 2000, at San Juan Medical Center, Farmington, N.M. Services will be
held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at New Covenant Methodist Church, 4600
College Blvd., Farmington, with Pastor Connie Hill officiating.
Margaret was born Nov. 30, 1946, at Hay Springs, Neb.,
to Robert and Erneta (Blum) Roark.
Margaret graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School,
had been employed by J.C. Penney Co., Schlumberger Oil Service and Advance
Communications.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa of Farmington;
son, Garry and granddaughters Samantha and Shelby of Roswell, N.M.;
sister, Roberta and husband, Dean McCabe of Tome, N.M.; brothers and
wives, Joel and Patricia of Flora Vista, N.M.; Patrick and Michelle of
Akron, Colo.; David and Denise of Farmington; and Kieth and Janet of Santa
Rosa, Calif. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles,
cousins and friends.

Emma Jones Chilly
Emma Jones Chilly of White Mesa, Utah, passed away
Sept. 6, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She was 61.
Visitation is set for Saturday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 7
p.m. in the Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be
on Monday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. at the chapel. Pastor Terrance Begay will
officiate the services. Interment will follow in the Cortez Cemetery.
Mrs. Chilly was born to Tom and Beulah Jones on Sept.
15, 1938, in Hatch, Utah. She married Tom Chilly in 1969 in Shiprock, N.M.
Mrs. Chilly was a homemaker. She lived in the Four Corners area all of her
life.
She enjoyed cooking, butchering and the outdoors;
helping other people, and she loved her family and enjoyed being with her
friends.
Emma Jones Chilly is survived by her sons, Richard
Chilly of Farmington, N.M.; Tommy White Horse (Rachael) of Red Mesa,
Ariz.; daughters, Roseanne Tenorio (Nicholas) of Aneth, Utah; Sylvia
Lansing (Cecil) of Hogback, N.M.; Nancy Yazzie (Jackson) of Waterflow,
N.M..; brothers, Harry Jones (Marilyn) of Cortez; David Jones (Rosie) of
Cortez; and Charles Jones of Blanding, Utah; sisters Betty Nakai (Wayne)
of Aneth; and Amelia Deschinny of Towaoc; and numerous nieces, nephews and
grandchildren.,
She was preceded in death by her husband and two
brothers, Lee and Joe Jones.

John H. Ihnen
Memorial services for John Herman Ihnen, a longtime
resident of Cortez, will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Harry Burdick will officiate. Interment
services will be held in Massena, Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Massena
Cemetery.
John was born on Nov. 20, 1931, in Cumberland, Iowa to
Frederick Ihnen and Theda Marie (Steffen) Ihnen. He passed away at the
Valley Inn Nursing Home on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at the age of 68.
On April 6, 1958, John was united in marriage to Patsy
Nadine Jensen at the United Methodist Church in Massena, Iowa. Patsy
passed away on Oct. 3, 1999. John will be laid to rest beside Patsy.
During the Korean War, John served his country in the
Army. After his discharge he became involved in the American Legion. He
served as Commander in the Legion. He was also the fire chief for 24 years
in Massena. John loved to tinker with engines. During his stint in the
Army, John learned his mechanic working abilities. He was very involved in
stock-car racing with his sons Tim and Terry. John also loved to fish.
Surviving John are his children, Sue Ihnen of Laughlin,
Nev., Donna Ihnen of Laughlin, Nev., Tim Ihnen and his wife, Dody, of
Cortez, and Terry Ihnen and his wife, Trish, of Cortez. A son, Mark Ihnen
preceded him in death in December 1979. He is also survived by six
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Bourland
of Edgewood, N.M., and Eloise Meyer of Chester, Iowa; and a brother,
Vernon Ihnen of Cumberland, Iowa.

Jerry T. Phillips
Jerry Thomas Phillips, a resident of Mancos since 1993,
passed away on Sept. 4, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 59.
Services were held Friday, Sept. 8. Mr. Dave Doran
officiated the services.
Mr. Phillips was retired and was enjoying his life
here. He was a member of Iron Worker’s Local #416.
He is survived by his wife, Lorrie Lynn of Mancos;
mother, Eva Skinner-Burigsay of Mancos; sons, Mark Phillips of Pittsburg,
Calif., David Phillips of Antioch, Calif., and Allan Lawrence-Phillips of
Mancos; daughters Gina Phillips of California, Jennifer Schmidt-Phillips
of Cortez, April Mataele-Phillips of Mesa, Ariz. and Holly
Lawrence-Phillips of Mancos.
He is also survived by his brother, Michael Burigsay of
California; seven grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tom, brother,
Dale and a sister, Joyce.
Mr. Phillips was an organ donor.

Gary Dell Powell
Funeral services for Gary D. Powell, a longtime
resident of Cortez, are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m.
Services will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Mr. Royce Atkinson
will be officiating.
Gary was born to Morris and Sally Robena (Atkinson)
Powell on June 5, 1940, in Shamrock, Texas. He passed away on Sunday,
Sept. 3, 2000 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home after a long illness. He
was 60 years old.
Gary worked for the United States Postal Service since
1962. He served the community of Cortez as a supervisor in the Post Office
for many years. Prior to his work for the post office, Gary served his
country in the US Marine Corps He was honorably discharged in 1962.
Gary was well loved by many and is survived by his son,
Christopher Adam Powell of Cortez; and his daughter, Deanna Louise Powell
of Dolores. He is also survived by his grandchild, Charlee Tehya Powell-Wiescamp
of Dolores, and his aunt, Vena Kelso of Arriola, Colo.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Ambrosia Hoeschen
Ambrosia Mae Hoeschen, a longtime resident of Cortez,
passed away Aug. 30, 2000, in the Valley Inn Nursing Home of Mancos. She
was 84.
A mass is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. at
St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Father Joe McGuinnes will officiate.
Mrs. Hoeschen was born on Dec. 7, 1915. She married
Richard F. Hoeschen on March 12, 1943, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Ambrosia was a member of Catholic Daughters of America.
She loved all her friends and working in her yard raising her beautiful
flowers that she shared with her friends and neighbors. She was always
there when someone needed help. She loved to crochet and loved her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.
She is survived by a son, Alan Hoeschen of California;
three grandchildren: David Hoeschen, Adrienne Quezada and Kim Bond; and
six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hoeschen precedes her in death, along with two
sisters.
