Warren V. Morris
Warren V. Morris of Paso Robles, Calif., passed this
life on Aug. 26, 2000. He was 91.
He was born Aug. 20, 1909, and raised in Aurora, Ind.,
the son of George and Alma Morris.
A graduate of the Indiana University School of
Medicine, he practiced medicine in Monticello, Ind., for 50 years.
During World War II, he commanded a front-line mobile
army hospital company through France and Germany. He retired to Paso
Robles in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Richard of
Jacksonville, Fla.; Stan of Cortez; and John of Portage, Ind.;
grandchildren Betsy of Aurora, Colo.; Alex of McMurdo Station, Antarctica;
Andrew of Lafayette, Ind.; Daniel of Dakar, Senegal, West Africa; and
Emily of Portage, Ind.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to the University
of Southern California Medical School for medical education.
Irma Arline Portner
Irma Arline Portner, a resident of Durango for 24
years, passed away peacefully at her residence on Aug. 25, 2000, with her
loving husband of 69 1/2 years at her side. She was 93.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2, at
3 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness, 2537 County Road
203, Durango. Kevin Karly will officiate.
Mrs. Portner was born to John Russell and Gertrude
McKern Robinson on April 1, 1907, at Corydon, Iowa. She attended school
there and graduated from high school. On April 29, 1931, she married
Freelin Martin Portner in Los Angeles. They were blessed with five
children.
Mrs. Portner was a homemaker and a member of the
Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she worked as a missionary since 1952. She
enjoyed reading, knitting, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and while
attending high school, she performed in leading roles in he plays.
She was also the senior class vice president. While her
family resided in Hawaii, Mrs. Portner was president of the PTA. She
enjoyed singing and had a beautiful singing voice.
Irma Arline Portner is survived by her husband, Freelin
Martin Portner of Durango; one son and four daughters: Jack (Bette)
Portner; Shirley Edwards; Virginia "Ginny" (Larry) Butler; Lani
Marie Munsee; and Sandra (Byron) Munsee; sister, Fern Sanders; 22
grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mrs.. Portner lived to see five generations of family.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack
Robinson; sister, Marie Herbert; son-in-law Rex Edwards; grandson Wayne
Downey; granddaughter Karen Edwards; and four great-grandchildren.

Michael Omer Deabay
Memorial services for Michael Omer Deabay, a Mancos
resident for the past seven years, will be held Monday, Aug. 28, at Boyle
Park beginning at 1 p.m. Melvyn Horrocks will officiate. Per Mike's
request, this is a celebration of the life that he lived and loved.
Michael was born in Rockville, Conn., on May 14, 1955,
to Omer Deabay and Pauline (Soucier) Deabay. He passed away suddenly on
Aug. 24, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 45.
Mike is survived by his wife, Darlene Deabay and son,
Mark Deabay, of Mancos; his loving parents, Omer and Pauline Deabay of
Connecticut; and several brothers and sisters, Martha Delfino, Sherry
Cazzetta, and Dick Deabay, all of Connecticut, and Gary Deabay of Florida;
as well as several nieces and nephews.
In July of 1993, Mike, Darlene, and Mark relocated to
Mancos from Connecticut with Metallics West. It was with this company that
Mike had worked with Michael Mola for the past 23 years. Here they started
a new life in the small town of Mancos.

Michael Deabay with the Mancos Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Edna Taylor
Funeral services for Towaoc resident Edna Faye Taylor
are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m.
Services will be held at the Towaoc Presbyterian Church
with Mr. Carl Knight officiating. Interment will follow at the Towaoc
Cemetery.
Visitation has been set for Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the
Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 1 and 5 p.m.
Ms. Taylor was born in Cortez on Feb. 16, 1966. She
passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., on Aug. 24, 2000.
Edna died due to complications from a car accident she
was involved in over a year ago. She was 34.
Edna loved to have fun and enjoyed Western dancing and
mud-bogging with her pickup. Her favorite animals were cats and kittens.
Edna is survived by her dear father and mother,
Clifford Lee and Jean (Marsh) Taylor, Sr., of Towaoc.
She is also survived by her sister, Diane Jean Taylor
of Towaoc, Colo. She was loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews,
cousins, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Noel Lee Taylor and
Clifford Taylor, Jr.
Robert Chambers Norwood,
Jr.
A memorial service for Robert Chambers Norwood, Jr.,
will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, at the Summit Ridge Cemetery beginning at
11 a.m. Father Jerry McKenzie of St. Paul's Episcopal Church will
officiate.
Robert was born on April. 2, 1913, in Rayville, La., to
Robert Chambers Norwood and Jeanette (Wright) Norwood. Robert passed away
on Aug. 21, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 87.
Robert had been a resident of Cortez for most of the
past 41 years. He married his bride, Betty B. Barrett, on Aug. 10, 1941,
in Oklahoma City, Okla., in the Episcopal Cathedral.
Robert was a Certified Public Accountant, belonging to
the American Institute of CPAs. He was an active member of the community
and belonged to the Lions Club and the Masons. He was a Life Scout for the
Boy Scouts of America and remained very active in the local Boy Scouts of
America.
He worked with the Interior Department Petroleum
Administration during World War II as Controller. During the War he was
the leader in the sales of war bonds for the government and today he was a
supporter of the World War II Memorial yet to be constructed.
Prior to moving to Cortez in 1959, Robert was the
treasurer and controller for the International Co-op of Kansas City, which
is now known as Farmland Industries. He was instrumental in the
development of computers. Upon moving to Cortez, Robert held the position
of treasurer and controller under the employment of Ansel Hall and the
Mesa Verde Company.
Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty B.
Norwood of Cortez. He is also survived by his dear children: his son,
Robert C. Norwood III and his wife, Patricia of Houston, Texas, and his
daughter, Trudy J. Estes and her husband, Gary of Vicksburg, Miss. His
grandchildren are Robert C. Norwood IV of Irvine, Calif., Justin A. Olin
of Cortez, Katie Olin Allen of Middleburg, Fla., Lauren E. Estes of
Vicksburg, Miss., Lindsay A. Estes of Vicksburg, Miss., and Jesse James
Allen, a great-grandson, of Middleburg, Fla.
A brother and sister preceded him in death.

Charles "Cy" Joseph
Johnson
Funeral services for Charles "Cy" Joseph
Johnson will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel
beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will be at the Cortez Cemetery following the
service. Pastor Gerald Andrews of the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church
will be officiating.
Charles was born on Feb. 25, 1924, in Cortez, to
Charles Augustus and Dorothy Emma (Carlile) Johnson. Cy passed away on
Aug. 20, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 76.
Cy was raised in Cortez and attended the Aztec School,
Lower Valley School, Mildred School and Cortez High School. He was on the
varsity football team at Cortez High School during his four years there.
Cy enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 28, 1944. He
served in the 4169 Quartermaster Depot Company. He served his country in
the Southern Philippines during the liberation and the Japanese
occupation. He was honorably discharged from the Army on April 29, 1946.
Upon returning to Cortez, on May 7, 1946, he married
his high-school sweetheart, Janice Baker. To this union two children were
born: Kevin C. and Myrna Gayle. Cy, Janice, and their children made their
home in Cortez. During these years, Cy farmed, cowboyed, and worked in
service stations.
He was probably best remembered for the years of
delivering propane, where he made many acquaintances and friends. Many a
cup of coffee was enjoyed in many homes with these friends. Cy was skilled
in many fields, but his favorite work was in construction. He thoroughly
enjoyed his years as a heavy-equipment operator.
Cy was preceded in death by his parents and by his
daughter, Myrna Gayle, in 1969, and a nephew, Daniel Lichliter, this year.
Cy is survived by his wife, Janice, of the family home;
his son Kevin and wife Janet of Cortez; and two grandchildren, Kevin Lex
and Erin Lynell Johnson. Cy is also survived by one brother, Bill Johnson
of Greeley, Colo.; and his two sisters, Catherine Lichliter and Josephine
Greenlee of Cortez; many nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends.

Dorothy (Haney) Kirsch
Dorothy (Haney) Kirsch, 73, died at her home in Corpus
Christi, Texas, on July 9, 2000.
She was born to Charles B. and Maggie (James) Haney on
Jan. 27, 1927, at the family home southwest of Old Ackmen, Colo. She grew
up and attended school in Colorado. In 1947, she moved to Texas and
resided there until her death. She was a devoted Christian and loved to
serve the Lord.
She is survived by two daughters, Laura Del Baker of
Mathis, Texas and Jenifer Dixon of Corpus Christi; sons, Sam Blackstock of
Thailand and Jason Kirsch of Houston; four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Also surviving her are sisters Lucille Ellis of
Tangent, Ore. and Betty Bearly of Lewis; and brother Marvin Haney of The
Dalles, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy
Trevithick, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held July 11 at the Corpus
Christi Funeral Home and she was laid to rest in Seaside Memorial Park,
Corpus Christi.
Howard Neil Acott
Howard Acott passed away on Aug. 18, 2000, at San Juan
Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M., of lung cancer.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Howard’s
life is planned for Monday, Aug. 21, from noon on at the Acott residence,
28966 County Road M. No funeral services will be held.
Howard was born in Sterling, Colo., on Sept. 2, 1938.
He is survived by his wife, Deanne Acott; sons Neil Acott and wife Doris;
and Kirk Acott and wife Kristine, all of Cortez; and daughter Kim Walter
and husband Joe of Mancos. Howard will also be missed by his five
grandchildren: Amy and Kelly Linman, and Aeron, Kayla and Tell Acott.
A memorial fund in Howard’s name benefiting the San
Juan Basin Technical School has been established at Mancos Valley Bank,
P.O. Box 450, Mancos CO 81328.
Oda Martin
Funeral services for Oda P. Martin will be held on
Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Mancos Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Webber Cemetery
in Mancos. Bishop Melvin Horrock will be presiding.
Oda was born on Dec. 4, 1917, in Elwood,
Utah, the daughter of Niels and Ingaborg (Olsen) Petersen. She passed away
at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Aug. 17, 2000. She was 82.
Oda is survived by her children: Al Martin
of Mancos, Kenneth Martin of Sixes, Ore., Roy Martin of Strasburg, Colo.,
Tom Martin of Red Bluff, Ore., Dawn Higgins of Cody, Wyo., Pete Martin of
Belview, Wash., Dan Martin of Sterling, Ala., and Bill Martin of Port
Orford, Ore. She was blessed with 40 grandchildren and numerous
great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Ester Clay of
Fruit Heights, Utah, Rozella Mock of Ore., and Betty Keefer of Ore.
Her loving husband, James Kenneth Martin, preceded her
in death on Sept. 28, 1972. They were married in Coburg, Ore., in May
1936.
Oda was a faithful member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mancos where services will be held.
Dessie Mae Hubbs Westfall
Funeral services for Dessie Mae Hubbs Westfall will be
held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, First Ward. Mrs. Westfall passed away on Monday, Aug.
14, 2000 in Cortez at the age of 89.
First Ward Bishopric will officiate. Interment will be
in the Lewis Cemetery.
Dessie Mae Westfall was born on Jan. 26,
1911, in Calumet, Okla., to Tom and Emma Brookshier Hubbs.
Survivors include her daughter, Nina Dennison of Idaho;
Neoma Jorgensen of Utah; Wanda Westfall of Utah, Olinda Gigliotti of
Colorado; and Dixie Kingsbury of Oregon. She is also survived by sisters,
Daisy Cox of Mancos; Rosetta Brinkerhoff of Cortez; brother Roy Lee Hubbs
of Lakewood, Colo.; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and four
great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orin K.
"Tub" Westfall; parents Tom and Emma Hubbs; brothers Jesse, John
Lake, and T.H.; sister Dottie, and a great-grandchild, Tanna Rae Williams.
Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Jeanette "Jackie" Romana Cooper
Funeral services for Jeanette "Jackie" Romana
Cooper will be held Tuesday, August 15, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic
Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at the Greenmount
Cemetery in Durango at 1 p.m. Rosary services are scheduled for Monday
evening at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Father Joseph
McGuinness will officiate.
Jackie was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sept. 15,
1933, the daughter of Jose Romana and Vivian (Kinnard) Romana.
She passed away at her home in Cortez on Thurs., Aug.
10, 2000.
She was 66 years old.
Jackie had lived in Cortez for the past six years,
leaving her home of 20 years in Hesperus. She was a very active and
dedicated member of the Catholic Daughters.
She loved ice-fishing and gardening. Jackie was
especially fond of the country music oldies and the Grand 'Ole Opry and
she attended the B-D Wranglers show every year.
Surviving Jackie are her three daughters, Judy Rhoads
of California, Sunshine "Jinx" Stevens of Iowa, and Julie
Watkins of Amarillo, Texas; and eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William B.
Cooper, on June 11, 1989; and by her son, Sonny Wilder.
Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
David A. Doyal
Memorial services for David A. Doyal, a resident of
Dove Creek, will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at the Dove Creek Assembly of
God Church beginning at 4:30 p.m. Pastor Marvin Pemberton will officiate.
David was born in Wallace, Ind. On Feb. 28, 1952, the
son of Emmett Doyal and Lyla Gertrude (Curtis) Doyal. He passed away at
the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Aug. 7, 2000. He was 48 years
old.
David worked as an assemblyman in the window coverings
industry. He was an active member of the Dove Creek Assembly of God
church.
He leaves behind to mourn his death his loving family;
his parents, Emmett and Lyla Doyal of Dove Creek; a sister, Elizabeth M.
Klock of Dove Creek; and brother, Bennie Eldon Doyal of Camp Verde, Ariz.
His brother, Melvin Jay Doyal preceded David in death. Arrangements are
being made through Ertel Funeral Home.
Harold Jantzen
Harold Jantzen, 77, of Beatrice, Neb., passed away
Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 7, 1922 at rural
Harbine, Neb.
Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 2:30
p.m. at First Mennonite Church in rural Beatrice. Pastors Weldon and
Florence Schloneger will officiate, and burial will follow at the First
Mennonite Church Cemetery.
He was united in marriage to Anna L. Barnard on April
5, 1945, and was a member of First Mennonite Church and the Men’s
Brotherhood at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters Mary
(Eldred) Brockemeir; Ruby Doyle of Cortez; grandchildren and their
spouses; and a brother, Dale (Lois) Jantzen. He was preceded in death by
his parents, Henry W. and Louise (Ensz) Jantzen.
A memorial has been established to Beatrice Community
Hospital Hospice.

Louise A. Sena
Funeral services for Louise A. Sena, a lifelong
resident of Mancos, will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Mancos First
Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Pastor Bill Fair will officiate. Interment will
follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Louise was born in Dolores, Colo., on June 24, 1923,
the daughter of Louis Archibeque and Mary P. (Lobato) Archibeque. She
passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Durango on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000.
She was 77.
In August 1944, Louise became the bride of Jose Adelido
Sena. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was very active in the First
Baptist Church and the Senior Center. She loved to crochet and tend to her
houseplants.
She leaves behind her loving family: daughters and
their husbands, Linda and Jim Cahall of Farmington, N.M., Mona and J.R.
Hannah of Albuquerque, N.M., Ida and Tino Valesquez of Mancos, Gloria and
Johnny Garcia of Mancos, and Christine and Ernie Garcia of Aztec, N.M.;
sons and their wives, Larry and Maxine Sena of Layton, Utah, and Max and
Rhonda Sena of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and
13 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Betsy Francois of Socorro, N.M.,
Bea Brown of Naturita, Colo., Irene Blednick of Aurora, Colo., and JoAnn
Newkirk of Texas. A sister, Marion Brewer, preceded Louise in death.
Dylan Kirk Dugan
Funeral services for Dylan Kirk Dugan, son of Lindy and
Doug, grandson of Kirk and Kay Kennedy, will be Friday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. at
Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Dylan is survived by his mother, Lindy Kennedy,
stepfather Douglas Hackett, sister Shelby, grandparents Kirk and Kay
Kennedy, great-grandparents Christine Applin and Merrill and Raye Kennedy,
aunt Leslie Kennedy, and numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joe Lyle Reed
Funeral services will be held for Joe Lyle Reed on
Wednesday, Aug. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in
Cortez. Pastor John Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at
Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Ertel Chapel on Tuesday,
Aug. 1, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Joe Lyle Reed was born to Sheldon Reed and May Ellen
(Stevenson) Reed on July 23, 1931, at the family home in Yellow Jacket,
Colo. He left this earth on Friday, July 28, 2000, at the age of 69 years.
He was the youngest of nine children, seven boys and
two girls.
Joe grew up in the Yellow Jacket area and farmed there
for many years. He attended school both in Fairview and Durango, and spent
some time in a military academy in Tennessee. Farming and trucking were
his favorite professions, and he accomplished many goals that he set for
himself.
Joe was a very supportive member of the local Grange,
Farmers Union, Southwest Colorado Bean Producers, National Bean Producers,
Elks Lodge, the Production Credit Association Board of Directors, Member
of the Montezuma County Hospital District Board of Directors, and working
toward the McPhee Reservoir.
He was well-known for his big vat of barbecued beans at
all community functions. However, his memory will be preserved by his
famous "Clorox Jug" to be found at local rain dances and every
Fourth of July at Dunton.
Joe loved to camp, hunt, play poker, pitch horseshoes,
and planting trees.
On March 25, 1952, Joe married Joyce Roubidoux. To this
union, five children were born, raised, and sent on their separate ways.
Joe is survived by his long-time companion, Alice J.
Belt of Cortez, as well as his five children, Spark and wife Alesa Reed of
Dolores; Sarah and husband Don Crowley of Cortez; Don and wife Sandy Reed
of Eagle, Colorado; Ellen and husband Leroy Oliver of Pleasant View; and
Dixie and husband Richard Lee of Yellow Jacket. He is also survived by 25
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, John Reed
of Cortez; and sisters, Thelma Duncan of Cortez, and Babe Black of
Durango.
Joe was preceded in death by both of his parents as
well as five brothers: Orie, Thorton, Clarence, Jack and Bill.
Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to the
Pleasant View Fire Department and the American Heart Fund at the First
National Bank in Cortez.

Capt. Ralph Edward (Ed) Spore
Funeral services for Captain Ralph Edward (Ed) Spore,
U.S. Air Force Jag Corps, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at St. Rita's
Mission in Mancos beginning at 2 p.m. Interment is to follow at the Cedar
Grove Cemetery.
Captain Spore was killed in a tragic swimming accident
on July 29, 2000, in Mesaiva, Japan. The son of Norman and Helen Spore, Ed
was born on July 9, 1966 in Grand Junction, Colo. He graduated from Mancos
High School in 1984 and went on to acquire his law degree from Denver
University. Captain Spore joined the Air Force in 1995 and was just
beginning a successful career practicing law.
His two small children, Courtney Nicole Spore, 5 years
old and Wesley Spore, 4 years old of Melbourn, Fla. survive Captain Spore.
He is also survived by his parents, Helen Spore of Mancos, Colo. and
Norman Spore of Dolores, Colo.; his sister and brother-in-law, Melinda and
Jeff Martinez of Mancos, Colo.; and his brother and sister-in-law, Matthew
and Dana Spore of Missoula, Montana.; his brother, Shane Spore of Mancos,
Colo.; his foster brother, Reggie Jacket; as well as numerous aunts,
uncles, cousins, and friends.
Captain Ralph Edward Spore was taken from us
unexpectedly at the age of 34, and his untimely death has left his family
suffering a tremendous loss.

Conner will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, beginning at 11 a.m. at the First
Baptist Church in Cortez.
Janet Cheryl Keck was born on Nov. 2, 1956 in Nocona,
Texas to the late Richard Keck and Betty Weaver Keck. She passed away in
Amarillo, Texas on July 28, 2000, at the age of 43.
She married Richard Conner in 1975.
Janet is survived by her husband, Richard L. Conner of
Amarillo, Texas; three daughters, Chloe C. Barrios, Brittany S. Conner, and
Wendy L. Pace, all of Amarillo; and one son, Richard R. (D. Ray) Conner, of
Amarillo.
Also surviving her are her parents, Steve and Betty Exum
of Cortez; two sisters, Landis Porter and Brenda O'Brien of Cortez; one
brother, Dick Keck of Cortez; as well as five grandchildren and numerous
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viola Calhoun
Services were held at a Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints in Phoenix for Mrs. Viola Calhoun, 93, of Phoenix, who
passed away in a hospital there on July 19, 2000.
Her nine children survive her, including Clarence and
LaVerne Calhoun and granddaughters; Susie Myers and family; Sarah Miller and
family of the Cortez area and Jackie Nelson of Durango.
She is also survived by grandchildren Clancy Calhoun of Aztec, N.M.,
Jennifer Calhoun Nichols of Tacoma, Wash. and Laurie Calhoun Winemiller of
Bellingham, Wash. A total of 15 grandchildren survive Mrs. Calhoun, as do
four great-grandchildren. Former daughter-in-law Marjorie Calhoun also
survives Mrs. Calhoun.
Victor Andrew Lopez
Funeral services for Victor Andrew Lopez, a lifelong
resident of this area, will be held Thursday, July 27, at St. Margaret
Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the
Cortez Cemetery.
Mr. Lopez passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on
Sunday, July 23, 2000. He was born at Summit Ridge, Colo., on June 20,
1937, the son of Frank Lopez and Juanita Donna (Espinoza) Lopez. At the
time of his death he was 63 years old.
Victor was united in marriage to Gloria Priscilla
Martinez on June 29, 1961 at Summit Ridge. To this union were born six
children, Connie, Eddie, Carol, Debra, Johnny, and Dolores. Victor and
Priscilla had recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. Victor
loved to hunt, fish, and camp, but most importantly, he always helped his
friends and neighbors.
A large and loving family is left to mourn Victor's
passing. They include his wife, Priscilla of Summit Ridge; his children,
Connie Paredes and her husband, Ricardo of Cortez, Carol Christine Lopez
of Cortez, Debra Brito and her husband, Carlos of Summit Ridge, Johnny
Lopez and his wife, Amy of Cortez, and Dolores Lopez of Summit Ridge; 19
grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, Ashley Lopez. Victor is also
survived by five brothers, Tommy Lopez, Frankie Lopez, Geno Lopez, Tony
Lopez all of Summit Ridge, and Abe Lopez of Wales, Utah; and his sister,
Ida Mott, also of Summit Ridge.
His son, Eddie Lopez, preceded him in death in 1998.

Helen Lewy McKibben
Funeral services for Helen Lewy McKibben, a lifelong
resident of this area, will be held Monday, July 24, at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Officiating will be Pastor Jimmy Kennedy of the First Southern Baptist
Church
Mrs. McKibben passed away in Durango, Colo., on
Tuesday, July 18, 2000. She was born in rural Montezuma County, Colo., on
Aug. 24, 1896, the fourth of seven children of Adam Lewy and Mary Ann
(Johnson) Lewy. She was 103 years old at the time of her death.
Helen attended elementary and high school in Cortez.
She married Frank McKibben in Cortez on Sept. 15, 1915. Frank and Helen
homesteaded on Bug Point in the early years, came back to Cortez and
stayed until 1942 at which time they went to southern California where
Helen worked in the shipyard at San Pedro as a layout person. In 1945
Helen and Frank returned to Colorado and owned and operated a dry good
store in Dove Creek. In 1969 they came to Cortez to retire and renew old
acquaintances. Frank passed away on April 15, 1972.
Five daughters survive Helen, Frances Larimore of
Littlefield, Ariz., Aileen Hamilton of Golden Shores, Ariz., Marjorie Gore
of Cortez, Pat Lorenzine of Riverside, Calif., and Joy McEntire of
Durango. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, and numerous
great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren. A daughter, Jackie
Ballard preceded her in death.
Services will be under the direction of the Ertel
Funeral Home.
Edna Arlene Ross
Edna Arlene Ross, a longtime resident of west end
Montrose and San Miguel counties, passed away July 20, 2000, in the Valley
inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 80 years old.
A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, July 22,
at 4 p.m. in the Norwood Cemetery.
Edna was born to Ira and Sarah Ellen Davis Stoddard on
June 22, 1920 at Cedar, Colo. She grew up and attended school in
Disappointment Valley. She and her family moved to Norwood, where they
resided most of her life.
On Nov. 17, 1938, she married Cecil Ross in Telluride.
He passed away in November 1986. Edna was a homemaker all her life. She
enjoyed the outdoors, helping other people, and especially enjoyed her
volunteer work with the senior citizens’ group in Norwood and Nucla.
Most of all, Edna enjoyed being with her family.
Edna Arlene Ross is survived by her son Charles (Edith)
Ross of Mesquite, Nev.; foster son, Albert (Ann) Blair of Grand Junction,
Colo.; daughters Wilma Patton and friend Mike of Cody, Wyo.; Lila (Don)
Arnold of Nucla, and Sharon (Charles) Blaisdell of Cortez. She is also
survived by 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great
grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
Cecil, a son, two grandsons and five half-sisters.

George Mike Young
Funeral services for George Mike Young, 81, of Mancos,
will be held Saturday, July 22, at the Mancos First Baptist Church
beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor
Paul K. Wilson will officiate.
Mike passed away at Mancos, Colo., on Wednesday, July
19, 2000. He was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Colorado Springs, Colo., son of
George B. Young and Lucy (Hayes) Young. He was brought back to their ranch
in Dry Creek Basin in San Miguel County at two weeks old, where he was
raised and schooled.
After graduating from CSU and majoring in Animal
Husbandry, Mike returned to Dry Creek Basin in 1940 to take over the ranch
for his ailing father. Mike Young was involved in the area's politics,
serving on the school board, San Miguel Water Board, Southwest Water
Board, as well as twenty-four years as San Miguel County Commissioner, and
4-H leader in Mancos and Dry Creek Basin. After selling his Dry Creek
Basin ranch in 1978, Mike moved to Mancos, where he lived until his death.
Mike was a member of the Elks Lodge and he was very involved and proud of
his work in the AA program of which he was a 25-year member.
Mike loved working with his horses, riding in the
mountains, deer and elk hunting, and taking care of his ranch operation.
He loved his work with sheep, cattle, horses, and raising mules. Mike's
work was his hobby, pastime and love. When not doing these things, he
loved to read and was a very good artist, especially drawing cartoons. He
was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will
be dearly missed by all.
Mike is survived by his wife, Shirley Young of Mancos;
daughters, Carolyn Young of Norwood, and Jacquelyn Franklin of Norwood;
sons, Dr. William Young and wife Diana Young of Eugene, Ore., and James
Young and wife, Juanita Noth Young of Norwood; stepchildren and their
spouses, Trudy and Randy Williams of Mancos, Chris and Cherie Russell of
Palisade, Colo., Jimmie and Julie Reneau of Tijeras, N.M., and Chrissy
Haines and Robert Taylor of Mancos. He is also survived by 21
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey
and Bev Young of Mancos; two sisters, Lucinda "Cinny" Sullivan
of Redvale, Colo., and Nancy Haller and her husband, Howard of Showlow,
Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Mike was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha
Young; son-in-law Jim Franklin, and by Margaret "Babe" (Morris)
Young, mother of his children, in 1997.

Charles "Charlie" Edward Dickerson
Charles "Charlie" Edward Dickerson passed
away in his home in the Summit Ridge Community Thursday, July 20, 2000, at
the age of 85. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to celebrate
Charlie’s life and to share memories between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday,
July 23, in the Dickerson home at 39533 Road P.5.
Memorial services will be held Friday, July 28, in
Brawley, Calif. Charles’ family would appreciate a contribution to the
American Heart Association in lieu of floweres.
Charlie was born in Holtville, Calif., Feb. 15, 1915.
He lived in Westmorland, Calif., where he owned and operated Dickerson’s
Towing with his wife Gene from 1937 until his retirement in 1981. Charlie
and Gene have resided on Summit Ridge most of the time since 1982, where
he has enjoyed hunting, fishing and become known as bidder Number 1 at
many local auctions. Two years ago he converted a snowcat into an off-road
recovery vehicle to tow cars from the sand and mud. it was featured in
4-Wheeler magazine. Charlie loved to share his projects and inventions,
and always had a knack for figuring out ways to build new mousetraps.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gene; son
Steve and daughters Virginia Dickerson and Nancy Dickerson Shaw,
daughter-in-law Tonya Dickerson, son-in-law Gary Shaw, brother Howard
Dickerson and wife Marion; grandchildren Stephanie Adams and husband
Chuck, Sarah Dickerson and Garan Shaw; great-grandchildren Rachel and
Steven Adams, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie will always be remembered as a loving huband, father and good
friend.
Cleola Goff
Funeral services for longtime Mancos resident Cleola
Maye Goff will be held Saturday, July 22, at the Mancos First Baptist
Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove
Cemetery. Pastor Jimmie Burton will officiate.
Cleola was born the daughter of Elmer Walker
Dean and Margamia Maye (Cauler) Goff on Sept. 25, 1930, in Big Spring,
Texas. She passed away at San Juan Regional Medical Center on Monday, July
17, 2000, at the age of 69.
On Feb. 10, 1947, Cleola became the bride of Charles
Oliver Goff in Aztec, N.M. Cleola was a devoted wife and mother, she loved
cooking and camping. She was a member of the Mancos First Baptist Church
and the John Derrick Halls VFW Post 5231 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving Cleola is her husband of 53 years, Charles
Goff of Mancos; and her children, Carol Ann Denton of Mancos, David Edward
and Linda Goff of Mancos, Deana Maye and Mike Smith of Mancos, Celia Jon
and Steve Boyd, of Mancos, and Edythe Kay and Steve Hurst of Mancos. Two
sons Darryl Glenn Goff and Clayton Lloyd Goff preceded her in death in
1975. 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and four brothers,
Paul Dean of Crawford, Colo., Geary Dean also of Crawford, Edward Fox of
Desert Center, Calif., and Elmer Dean Jr., also survive Cleola.

Floyd John Barnum
Floyd John Barnum passed away at
his home in Mancos on July 17, 2000. Memorial services will be held at
Trinity Lutheran Church in Cortez on July 29 at 9:30 a.m.
Floyd was employed by Montgomery
Ward in 1956, and retired in 1981, while serving as district manager in
Baltimore, Md. He then joined Motel 6 as a vice president, and he and his
wife retired to Mancos in 1991.
Floyd was active in the community.
He volunteered at the Cortez Welcome Center, was an honorary lifetime
member of Cortez Rotary, and was a member of Southwest Hospital board of
Directors.
Floyd is survived by his wife,
Nancy; sons and their families Scott (Meg) Barnum and grandson, Nicolas of
Birmingham, Ala. ; Craig (Debbie) Barnum and granddaughters Jennifer and
Melinda of Baltimore; daughter Kristen (Randal) Black and grandchildren

William Eberling
Clarence William Eberling passed away at his home in
Cahone on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the age of 71. Funeral services will
be held in Lake Havasu City. Memorial services will be held at the Dove
Creek First Southern Baptist Church on Monday, July 24, beginning at 7
p.m.
Mr. Eberling was born in Patagonia, Ariz., on Nov. 25,
1928, the son of John C. Eberling and Lenore (Garza) Eberling. An
excavation contractor, Clarence was a pioneer of Lake Havasu City. He was
a member of the Operator Engineers Association and of AQHA. He enjoyed
hunting.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Ilse Eberling of
Cahone; three sons, Jack W. Eberling, of Denver, Colo., Bruce D. Eberling
of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ron Dale Reynolds of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a
daughter, Carol Ann Chase of Clairmont, N.H.; and 14 grandchildren, and 1
great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers, John Eberling of
Williams, Ariz., and Joe Eberling of Douglas, Ariz.; five sisters, Mary
Ann Fairchild of Douglas, Ariz., Pauline Price of Buckeye, Ariz., Margaret
Ross of Ajo, Ariz., Eva Bowden of Cahone, and Elizabeth Jenkins of Ajo,
Ariz., as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Lee Earl Reddert
Lee Earl Reddert, 80, passed away at his home in rural
Dolores, on July 17, 2000. Interment services will be held at St. Paul's
Church Cemetery in Sunman, Ind., on Tuesday, July 25, beginning at 10 a.m.
Pastor Joey Nelson of the Sunman Community Church will officiate.
Lee was born in Ripley County, Ind., on March 8, 1920
to Daniel Reddert and Sophia (Zimmer) Reddert. Lee loved fishing, reading
all types of books, and woodworking. He had a deep affection for baseball
and was a dedicated fan. Lee was a former Mason. He served his country
during World War II in the Army and was a member of the Sunman, Indiana
American Legion. Lee was united in marriage to Irene Calhoun on Nov. 5,
1949, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Lee is survived by his loving family; a son Fred
Reddert of Pensacola, Fla.; three daughters, Kathleen Reddert of Dolores,
Sharon Behunin and her husband, Alan, of Mancos, Colo., and Juanita
Reddert of Dolores. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jennifer
Frantz, Daniel Behunin and his wife, Ana, Michael Behunin, and Angela
Behunin; three great-grandchildren, Justin and Angel Frantz, and Leif
Behunin; a sister and her husband, Helen and Edward Mosmeier of Sunman,
Ind.; and a cousin, Lottie Reddert of Mancos.

Charles Ward Oglesby
Charles Ward Oglesby, a resident of Durango, passed
away Saturday, July 15, in the Four Corners Health Care Center, Durango.
He was 61.
Funeral services are set for Wednesday, July 19, at 4
p.m. in the Frontier Baptist Church, 2061 County Road 225, Durango.
Pastors Peter Reitz and Jerry Brush will officiate. Interment will follow
at the Florida Cemetery.
Mr. Oglesby retired from the U.S. Navy as a teacher in
electronics. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great
Lakes, Ill. for six years, and in Florida for three years. He was a member
of the Florida Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sons, Charles Ward Oglesby Jr. of
Durango; Jeff Oglesby of San Diego, Calif.; daughters Michelle (Bernard)
Dunn of Durango; Terri Hantman of London, England; and Denise Oglesby of
Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by his sister, Cora (Don) Smith of
Chicago and nine grandchildren.

John Wesley Sturdevant Sr
Memorial services for John Wesley Sturdevant, a
lifelong resident of this area, will be held Friday, July 21, at the Ertel

John was born in Farmington, N.M., on Sept. 10, 1934,
to John and Dortha Sturdevant. John passed away at his home in rural
Dolores on July 15, 2000. He was 65.
He and Roberta N. Phillips were wed in Holbrook, Ariz.,
on July 12, 1954. John was an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic, but
in his free time he loved working on cars for his grandsons. He also loved
horses and mules and fly-fishing in high mountain streams.
Surviving John are his wife of 46 years, Roberta
Sturdevant of Dolores; his children and their spouses, Melodie and Steve
Lente of Cortez, John Jr. and Stephanie Sturdevant of Longmont, Colo.,
Miles and Tammy Sturdevant of Cortez, and Teresa and Clark Wilson of Moab,
Utah; and eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters,
Charley Miller of Cortez, and Coleen Sturdevant of Texas; and a brother,
Bill Turner of Lewis, Colo. also survive John.

J.D., a lifelong resident of Cortez, passed away on
July 12, 2000. He was born in Cortez on May 17, 1973 to Kenneth Allen
Higgins and Judith Lenore (Raley) Higgins.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Judith
Higgins of Cortez; three brothers, David Jacolby Higgins and his wife
Michelle Mahan Higgins of Cortez, Orin Denton Higgins of Camp Pendleton,

Funeral services for Mellie Mae Redfoot, a lifelong

Mellie was born in Towaoc, Colo., on May 15, 1936, the
daughter of Julian Hight and Callie May Collins Hight. She passed away at
Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, July 13, 2000. She was 64 years old.
Surviving Mellie is her husband, Roger Julian Redfoot
of Towaoc; her children, Darrell Ketchum Sr., Frankie Ketchum both of
Towaoc, William Turtle Sr. of Albuquerque, N.M., Lupe Height, Victor Hight,
Delberta Redfoot all of Towaoc, Justina R. Redfoot of Ft. Duchesne, Utah,
Anita Thomas of Sacaton, Ariz., and Janet Redfoot of Towaoc; and numerous
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren. She
also leaves behind two sisters, Roberta Valdez and Ruth Martinez both of
Albuquerque, N.M.; and nieces, nephews, and many friends.
A daughter, Julia Redfoot; three sisters, Marie Hight,
Lucy Washington, and Janette Hight; and five brothers, Phillip Lopez Sr.,
Oscar Hight, Clarence Hight Sr., Bob May, and Charlie May Hight preceded
Mellie in death.
Esther Marie Cardoza,
Private family services will be held at a later date
for Esther Marie Cardoza, 91, of Cortez. Esther passed away at the Vista
Grande Nursing Home on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. She was born in
Stewartville, Minn., on May 29, 1909 to Wallace Vincent Olin and Eva
Adaline (Kingsley) Olin.
In her 20s, Esther sang professionally on stage and on
radio. She married Buck Ballard and the couple moved to San Jose, Calif.
in this 1950s. Esther and Buck divorced in 1956. In 1959 Esther married
Percy Cardoza, a widower with two teenaged children, Joan Cardoza, 13, and
Louie Percy Cardoza, 17, and had a ready-made family. Esther, not ever
having any children, took them in as her own.
Later, Esther began working in the medical profession
and until her retirement, worked for four doctors. She was married to
Percy until his death in October, 1983. Esther returned to her beloved
Colorado in 1984.
Esther is survived by the daughter and son that she
helped raise, Joan Cardoza Dwyer and Louie Percy Cardoza. She is also
survived by Viola Ferreri, who was a grown daughter of Percy's when Esther
and Percy married. She is also survived by several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Esther will be missed by all that knew her, but most of
all she will be missed by her daughter and her husband, Patrick, and her
granddaughter, Jennifer. We love you Mom and Grandma.

Sally Gann Now Hopkins, a resident of the Vista Grande
Nursing Home, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the age of 92.

Baptist Church beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Sally was born in Stillwell, Okla., on April 9, 1908,
the daughter of Joe Gann and Kate (Livers) Gann.
She is survived by her two sons, Herbert Hopkins of
Mesquite, Nev., and Sam Hopkins of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Ora
Watson of Green River, Wyo., and Eva Heath of Dolores; and two sisters,
Joana Christian and Billie Grits, both of Hominy, Okla.
Sally was preceded
in death by her husband, Sam W. Hopkins; a daughter, Imogene Thompson; a
son, Henry Hopkins; and a brother, Woodrow Gann.
Matilda "Tillie" Marie Fisher
Matilda "Tillie" Marie Fisher passed away at
the Mesa View Retirement Home on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. She was 78 years
old at the time of her death.
Tillie was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Bear
Creek, Mo., the daughter of Monroe Hunt Phillips and Laura Bell (Mayse)
Phillips.
Tillie spent her childhood in Clinton, Mo.,
attending grade school and graduating from high school there. She was
united in marriage to Ernest G. Fisher in Joplin, Mo., on March 13, 1943.
Tillie and Ernest had celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary earlier
this year. In 1992, Tillie and Ernest made Cortez their home.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Ernest Fisher of
Cortez; a daughter and her husband, Linda and James Spreine of San
Clemente, Calif.; a son and his wife, Gary E. and Jaclyn Fisher of
Dolores; and a sister, Marjorie Cooper of Vancouver, Wash.

Rev. Roy J. Griebel, of Hammel, Ill., passed away on
Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at San Juan Regional Medical Center, Farmington,
N.M. He was 82.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 14, from 3 to
8 p.m. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Hammel. Services will be
Saturday, July 15, 10 a.m., at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, with
interment to follow in the Immanuel Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Ronald Eslinger
will officiate.
Rev. Griebel was born in Mascoutah, Ill. on Feb. 16,
1918, the son of Henry J. and Annie Fires Griebel.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Bremer Griebel of
Hammel; daughter, Juanita (Paul) Hunter of Lansing, Mich.; son, Dr. Gerald
(Marilyn) Griebel of Dolores; grandchildren Theron Chaplin; Chandra (Todd)
Simmons; Peter Griebel; Stephan Griebel; Chandra (Wayne) Harrison; and
Colin Travis. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Irene Griebel of
Waterloo, Ill.; Ellen Ruth Bremer and Mary Bremer, both of Metropolis,
Ill; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother,

Vicki passed away at Lovelace Medical Center in
Albuquerque on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the age of 34. She was born in
Butte, Mont. on June 23, 1966.

family of Dolores; Julie Clinger of Provo, Utah; mother-in-law Varis Lewis
of Ramah; grandparents, Charles and Annie Hinton of Cortez; Darwin and

John Miller 'Jack'
Bircher
Memorial services for John Miller
"Jack" Bircher, 90, of Mancos, will be held Wednesday, July 12,
at the Mancos First United Methodist Church beginning at 10 a.m. A private
burial service will be held for the immediate family only.
Jack passed away on July 8, 2000, in
Aztec, N.M. He was born on July 10, 1909 to Elizabeth (Miller) and Gustave
Bircher. Jack married Avis L. Culbertson on May 27, 1942 in Cheyenne, Wyo.
They lived in Denver, Colo. for a short time while Jack worked at the
Remington Munitions Plant as a foreman. Following that, they returned to
Mancos, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Jack is survived by his son, John E.
Bircher, and his wife, Wendy; and his only grandchild, Matthew John
Bircher, all of Farmington, N.M. His wife, Avis; parents, Elizabeth and
Gustave; and sister Barbara, preceded him in death.
Jack was devoted to his family and was
an honest man willing to help others in any way he could. Jack loved and
farmed his own land for over 50 years. His kind spirit and the stories he
loved to tell will be dearly missed by his family.

Alva Nell Caler
Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Alva
Nell Caler, will be held Thursday, July 13, at the Cortez First United
Methodist Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez
Cemetery. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Sunday, July
9, 2000, at the age of 95.
Alva is survived by her daughter and son-in-law,
Claudia and Elijah Blair of Cortez; three grandchildren and their
families; and family members, Brad Morrison of Moab, Utah, and Denise
Morrison of Louisville, Ky. She also leaves behind five
great-grandchildren; one sister, and one brother.
Memorial contributions can be made in Alva Caler's name
with the Cortez First United Methodist Church. Ertel Funeral Home will be
in charge of the services.
Tina Marie Papoff
Funeral services for Tina Marie Papoff, 28, of Lewis,
will be held Thursday, July 13, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at
2 p.m. Burial will be held at the Arriola Cemetery.
Tina passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2000 in Cortez as
the result of an automobile accident.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin Papoff, children
Jace and Trisha, a brother, two sisters, her grandparents, friends, and
numerous aunts, unciles, cousins and friends.
Memorial contributions can be made in Tina Papoff's
name at the Citizens State Bank of Cortez.

Yvonne Berdeen Wilkerson
Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Yvonne Berdeen Wilkerson, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Cortez Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Cortez Cemetery. Bishop Danny Decker will be conducting.
Yvonne was born to Orland LeGrand Hansen and Hazel Irene (Olsen) Hansen in Spring City, Utah, on Nov. 5, 1929, the sixth of eight children. She passed away at her home in Cortez on Saturday, July 1, 2000. She was 70 at the time of her death.
After graduating from high school, Yvonne got a job in a sewing factory in Salt Lake City, Utah where she met and married Edwin Isaac Wilkerson on May 3, 1952. To this union seven children were born.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Wilkerson of Cortez; her children, Edwin Thomas Wilkerson and his wife, Lenda Jean, of Cortez; Sharlene Hansen and her husband Gerald Edwin Hansen Jr., of Rexburg, Idaho; Steed Wilkerson and his wife, Kathy, of Cortez, and Karen Wilkerson also of Cortez; and 22 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Three infant daughters preceded Yvonne in death, Debra Ann, Cheryl Dawn, and Karol Wilkerson. A brother, Veldon J. Hansen of Fredonia, Ariz.; and two sisters, Anna Cloward of Moroni, Utah, and Ina Larson of Sandy, Utah also survive Yvonne.

Betsy
Ann Martin
Betsy Ann Martin, a student
at Montezuma-Cortez High School, and resident of Cortez, passed away July
2. She was 18.
Funeral services are
scheduled for Sunday, July 9, at 2 p.m. in the Lighthouse Baptist Church,
11502 Highway 145 Cortez. Brother Don Smith will officiate the services.
Interment will follow the services in the Towaoc Cemetery, with reception
to follow at the Towaoc Gym.
Betsy Ann Martin is
survived and will always be loved and remembered by her parents, Alvin Sr.
and Bessie Scott Martin of Cortez; brothers, Alvin and wife, Shelli of
Cortez; Elvin Martin of Cortez, Robert Martin of Sterling, Colo., and
Herman Scott of Towaoc; sisters, Mary Jane Martin and her husband, Elroy;
Virginia Yazzie and husband, Milton of Cortez; and Louanai Martin of
Cortez She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her sister, Alvina Martin; brother, Peter Scott, and her maternal and
paternal grandparents.

William Jackson Gray
Funeral services for William
Jackson Gray, a resident of Mancos, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000,
at the Mancos First Baptist Church beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will
follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor Paul K. Wilson will be
officiating. Military honors will be conducted at graveside by the John
Derrick Halls Post #5231. Visitation will be held Thursday morning at the
Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon.
William passed away at his home in
Mancos on Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the age of 79. He was born in Blythe,
Calif., on Feb. 23, 1921, the son of William Edward Gray and Ethel Lillian
(Thomas) Gray.
During World War II, William
served his country in the Navy. On June 25, 1948, William was united in
marriage to Joyce Edna Gladden in Chandler, Ariz. William was a member of
the First Baptist Church and he loved to fish, garden and hunt arrowheads.
Surviving him is his wife of 52
years, Joyce Gray, of Mancos; his children and their spouses, William E.
and Patricia Gray of Chino Valley, Ariz., John M. and Karen Gray of
Mancos, Tricia Anne and Ronald C. Womack of Mancos, and Betty Jo and
Robert Luthins of Farmington, N.M. His grandchildren, William Gray, Nicole
Gray, Jared and Jamie Pearce, Joey Gray, James Gray, Marty and Michele
Archibeque, Ty Gray, Daven Womack, Steve Womack, Chris Robbins, Shane
Robbins, and Christina Farver; and three great-grandchildren survive him.
William is also survived by two brothers, Clyde Gray of Payson, Ariz., and
Chester Gray of Chandler, Ariz.

Ivane Lewis Capitan
Services for Ivane Lewis Capitan,
26, of Cortez, will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Roy Lee Church
in Aneth, Utah beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the family
cemetery in Aneth.
Ivane passed away in Aneth on
Sunday, July 2, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident. She was
born in Cortez on July 6, 1973, the daughter of Jimmy Capitan and Hazel
(Lewis) Capitan.
Ivane attended school in Cortez
and had worked as a cashier for several businesses. She was a lifelong
resident of Cortez.
She is survived by her mother,
Hazel Capitan of Cortez; a four-year-old son, Bowen Lee Lewis, also of
Cortez; two sisters, Laverne Hamm and her husband, Terrance, of Dolores,
and Yvonne Pipe of Cortez; and a brother, Ivan Lewis also of Cortez. Ivane
is survived by her maternal grandmother, Sarah Lewis; five nieces and
nephews, Taylor and Tanner Hamm, Caleb Lewis, and April and Shannon Lewis;
and by her aunts and uncles, Violet Billie, Estella Lewis, Elbert Lewis,
Wallace Lewis, Jerry Lewis, Leo Lewis, Lillie Lewis, Mary Dawes, Melvin
Capitan, Minnie Weston, and Nelson Capitan.
Preceding Ivane in death were her
father, Jimmy Capitan; maternal grandfather, Lee Lewis; and paternal
grandparents, Sam and Jessie Capitan.

conducting her services.
Martell 'Marty' Price
Martel White Eagle Price, a
lifelong resident of Towaoc, passed away July 2, 2000, at his residence.
He was 12 years old.
Funeral services are set
for Saturday, July 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Cortez-Four Corners Funeral
Chapel. Sister Lois Wooten and Rev. Fred Smith of Fort Duchesne, Utah,
will officiate. Interment will follow in the Towaoc Cemetery.
A visitation was held on
Friday, July 7, at the funeral chapel.
Martel was born on Feb. 16,
1988, to Lewis Edwin Sr. and Nola Lee Laner Price in Cortez. He had
attended school in Cortez.
Martel enjoyed listening to
country-western music and gospel music. He especially enjoyed the band
"Kentucky Headhunters." Another of his enjoyments was listening
to Norman Lopez’s program on Sundays, and the traditional music of the
Ute Mountain Ute tribe. Martel looked forward to playing with his brothers
and sisters, and enjoyed being with his relatives, especially his uncle,
Neal Lang.
Martel White Eagle Price is
survived and will always be loved by his parents, Lewis and Nola of Towaoc;
brothers, Lewis Jr. and Montel of Towaoc; sisters, Venita, Trisha and
Tanisha, all of Towaoc; aunts, Emily Nez, Wahella Begay, Gaylyne Laner,
Sandy Laner, Annabell Laner, Clarissa Laner, Joanna Laner, Berneta Laner,
Jancie Gallegos, and Lori Laner; uncles, George Wells Jr., Johnny Laner,
Byron Laner, James Price, Ernest Price, Wayne Marsh, Cecil Tabbee and Neal
Lang. He is also survived by many cousins and friends of the family.

Robert Dean Randolph
Funeral services for former
Cortez resident, Robert Dean Randolph, will be held Monday, July 10, at
the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m.
Military Honors will be
presented by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Cremation is to
follow with interment to be held at the Cortez Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled for
Sunday afternoon between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Ertel
Chapel.
Bob was born in Eminence,
Mo., on Oct. 16, 1932, the son of Ralph Randolph and Maude Young)
Randolph. He passed away here in Cortez on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the
age of 67.
Surviving Bob is his wife,
Kathleen (Cash) Randolph of Boise, Ida.; his children and their spouses,
Christine and John Terry of Boise, Ida., and R.D. and Carol Randolph of
Mumford, Tenn.; and five grandchildren. Bob also leaves behind two
sisters, Ruth Ferguson of Cortez, and Judy Lawson of Clovis, N.M.; and two
brothers, Kenneth Randolph of Dove Creek, and Paul Randolph of Avondale,
Ariz.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Both his
parents preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions can
be made in memory of Robert Randolph with the Dove Creek Ambulance Fund or
the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75.
