Law enforcement agencies in Durango and across the Four Corners have received more than $114,000 from the federal government to help pay for the search for three survivalist fugitives suspected of killing a Cortez police officer more than a year ago, officials said Tuesday.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office received a check Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Justice for $22,860 to help pay for expenses incurred during the manhunt that ensued after Cortez police officer Dale Claxton was gunned down May 29 while stopping a stolen water truck in Cortez.

Agencies from across the West joined in the search, which included more than 500 officers at its peak, but two of the suspected cop-killers – Jason Wayne McVean, 28, of Durango, and Alan "Monte" Pilon, 32, of Dove Creek – remain at large. A third suspect, Robert Mason, 26, of Durango, was found dead outside of Bluff, Utah, on June 4, 1998. Authorities said Mason committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol.

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office recently received a check for $58,149, according to Montezuma County Undersheriff Sam Hager, and Cortez Police Chief Roy Lane said he received a check Monday for $33,000. Hager said he asked the federal government for $75,112 to help repay the county for associated costs, but said receiving any reimbursement was welcome.

"We have no complaints," Hager said. "But the county gets the money, since they gave it to us in the first place."

Durango police Capt. Dale Smith said his department had not been reimbursed for any of the costs it incurred during the manhunt. Smith said he has no intention of requesting federal assistance for the search.

Officials from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the San Juan County, Utah, Sheriff’s Office, the two other local agencies that assisted in the manhunt, were not available Tuesday to discuss the amount of federal funds they had received.
