Two men last week threatened a person who gave police information about a possible sighting of two suspected cop-killers in Montezuma Creek, Utah, Navajo Police Chief Leonard Butler said Monday.

Butler said two men driving a late model, dark-colored van with green license plates on Wednesday approached the person near Aneth, Utah, about seven miles east of Montezuma Creek. One of the men, whom the person described as "chubby" and in his fifties, got out of the van and told the person "we’ll come back and take care of you."

Butler would not identify the person whom the men threatened, but said it was someone who had given authorities some information during the summer about a possible sighting of Alan "Monte" Pilon, 31, of Dove Creek, and Jason Wayne McVean, 27, of Durango.

The other man who threatened the person did not get out of the vehicle, Butler said, and could only be described as having long blond hair.

Neither man matched the description of Pilon or McVean, Butler said.

Pilon, McVean, and a third man, Robert Mason, 26, of Durango, are suspected of killing Cortez police officer Dale Claxton after he stopped them in a stolen water truck on May 29 in Cortez. Mason was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on June 4 about ten miles west of Montezuma Creek.

Butler said he plans to meet with his investigators today to determine if the person’s account of the threatening incident is credible.

Other people near Aneth reported seeing a similar van about the time the incident occurred, Butler said.

In June, hundreds of law enforcement officials converged on Montezuma Creek after a 9-year-old girl reported seeing two men matching Pilon and McVean trying to steal a water truck in the small Navajo town. Despite several sightings in July of men resembling the two survivalist fugitives, they remain at large.
